Default Best Time

Hi all,

We are in the last stage of our visa application at the moment as all we are waiting for is an IELTs test for me.( have a foreign passport but so will everybody else when they get to OZ). We have sold our house last year and are living with my mother and family at the moment. Not good idea for a long time we know.

We want to do some traveling so at the moment we have option of going in October travelling arriving in Adelaide December/January 2007 start of Academic year as Kersten is a Teacher, I am in IT, or stay in UK until Christmas 2006 and then go traveling and arrive in Adelaide July/August 2007
Has anybody done something similar and/or have any advice on :
1/ Job front best time of year
2/ Housing market for renting

Thanks for any help/advice

We have no kids

Hi Kersten and Sven

It is just the two of you so will be much easier anyway! I have met loads of couples who have travelled around Australia before settling down.

Finding somewhere to rent, we have looked all times of the year and there is always something available, especially smaller houses, its family size ones ie 4+ beds like we had to find that are the problem. You will be lost for choice if you look for a 2/3 bed apartment or house - no worries! As for the time of year ie Dec/Jan, we have had to move at that time twice since being here and it was a bit of a nightmare for the 4 of us, but again will be easier for you but, just bear in mind, that things are geared up for Christmas and the New Year celebrations wherever you are heading so, things do tend to slow down as it does in the UK - everything comes to a stand still whilst a lot of companies have their annual holidays! Like removals and estate agents for example!

I realise you will be landing in October and travelling around for a while before settling, so you will get a feel for whats going on within that time. Do you know whereabouts you will be living in Adelaide? If you do, when you arrive here you can (if you have internet access or visit a internet cafe) go on-line and start checking out whats available in that area - there are bound to be a few you can choose from, but in my opinion, the earlier you start to rent in December the better as the deeper you get into Christmas/New Year time the worst it gets and I am talking through experience, really dont want to be in that position again!!!!!! Besides, if you have the choice, you will want to ENJOY your first Christmas here not worry about moving in somewhere

The only comment I will make about the job front is - again 'time of year' a lot of companies have their 'shut down holidays' then! But, you can still do local searches once here - or before you arrive cant you?!

Anyway, good luck - your misses is a teacher, there should be jobs a' plenty for her, or has she already got one lined up?

Hope this helps a little but,
At the end of the day, it is up to you to make the decision when to come - whenever you do, you will have to just do what you need to do. You'll be fine

Gill
