Hi there
Although I'm not black so can't truly answer, I have found that it's more a question of how well you integrate, regardless of colour of skin.
I am British and am just quick to tell people that we came in on a skills visa, that it took a year and a half, that it cost us around $10,000 (including bond to gov) and that we can't claim any benefits and have to be fully self sufficient. After hearing all this, they seem to welcome you with open arms and generally say "we need more like you!"
Whilst there's a huge tendancy to getting talking to other British expats here, we try and socialise with Aussies as much as possible. I rave (genuinely) about the country and Aussies love an immigrant who loves their country, and try not to talk about Britain unless I'm asked.
I always feel odd at work as I stand out just with my accent (they all think I'm posh).
There'll always be a few thick idiots around wherever you end up. Just don't let any worries you may have stopping you giving it a go.

I was saying that bloody years ago. Attitude is king. Some people just know how to rub people up the wrong way. I know quite a few expats that make me cringe, they've been here 10 years but they still don't get it...
karma on the way

I can never forget my fist day working at Arnotts biscuit factory in Adelaide.
One of the women workers jokingly shouted out at me over the production line (in earshot of about 8 other workers) " Mate....show us your big black donger!"
(and no...I didn't try to prove the matter to her....has anyone seen the women on Prisoner Cell block H?)
So make of it what you will. The closest I likened some of the Oz attitude of race is similar to what I've encountered with the Irish....intrigue sometimes borderlining ignorance...but never nasty.
However...hearing of the events in Cronulla...maybe things have changed since 95...and are different if you scratch beneath the surface

[QUOTE=Des]As a 1st generation Australian married to an African who is on this forum I am asking you......Please, please read about the whole story on Cronulla and how over time the hatred between the Aussie/Lebanese and other Aussie's in that area started. Did you know that a group of Aussie/Lebanese 'young men' gang raped a young 14 year old girl in Cronulla. Would you feel hatred if that was your daughter or would you accept it?QUOTE]
Absolutely irrelevent.
and...shame on you for trying to excuse your ignorance because you are married to a black lass!
A group of young men gang raping a girl is no reason for the people of the same race as the girl to turn on people of the same race as the rapists.
Talk about stereotyping..and inflaming the situation.

Racist rapes: Finally the truth comes out

So now we know the facts, straight from the Supreme Court, that a group of Lebanese Muslim gang rapists from south-western Sydney hunted their victims on the basis of their ethnicity and subjected them to hours of degrading, dehumanising torture. The young women, and girls as young as 14, were "sluts" and "Aussie pigs", the rapists said. So now that some of the perpetrators are in jail, will those people who cried racism and media "sensationalism" hang their heads in shame? Hardly.

It seems rape is a bit more widespread here than I thought, I've just got back from the baby clinic and read a booklet in there stating that 17% of men between 16 and 24 get raped by another man in NSW this goes up to 1 in 4 if your a bloke in prison. This it goes on to say is only the reported rape as 90 to 95% of all men raped don't go on to report it. :scared:

That's nonsense, of course. The 17% figure is the percentage (of total sexual assaults reported) of assaults reported by men.

However, as you say, " In 1999, 81% of people reporting sexual assault in Australia were female, while 17% were male" is the actual info quoted.
The actual overall %'s of reported Rape Victims for 2002 are quoted at: http://www.nationmaster.com/graph-T/cri_rap_vic
with position 5 being Australia with 1.0% of population and
position 6 being United Kingdom with 0.9%.
