Customer's GST Guide

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if GST is included in the price when I do my shopping at Woolworths?
Woolworths assesses all products that it sells to determine whether GST must be included in the price.

Basic foods and beverages are free of GST. These include bread and white milk, meat (both fresh and processed), fruit and vegetables, pure fruit juice and breakfast cereals, pasta and rice, tea and coffee, and most ingredients and sauces for cooking.
Many other food and drink products are taxable, such as biscuits, snack-foods and confectionery, frozen dinners and meat pies, soft drinks and flavoured milk, and bakery products such as cakes, pikelets, scones, croissants and finger buns.

There are a small number of non-food items that are GST-free because of their medical properties. Sunscreens with a SPF of 15 or more, incontinence aids, and paracetamol tablets are examples of products in this category.

If a product is taxable, GST is already included in the shelf ticket price displayed with the product. This is the price that appears on your register docket.
Items that have GST included in the price are printed on your docket with an asterisk (*) before the description.

The total GST included in your purchases is shown at the base of your docket "Total includes GST.........."

Woolworths' register dockets are Tax Invoices, as specified by the GST Regulations.

http://www.woolworths.com.au/gst/

too many sites to plough through. I did used to have a booklet. When they first introduced the GST everyone was sent little booklets.

there was mass confusion.. even the pollies didn't have a clue on why some things like take fruit juice.. not 100% juice was with GST

What makes me laugh is is GST on second hand goods..lol, and books

Ceri Jul 20th 2004 5:31 pm

ahh incontinent aids are gst free.. so that's ok then' lol.. perhaps the pollies p themselves a lot and decided to make this gst free

I agree most pollies are men .. and that's why the world in such a mess ( please don't mention maggy)

Mrs D your diet is very very different from our household, my boys would be climbing the walls with 23 sugared or frozen items, I dont think they get that much junk in a year. We have to buy wholemeal, wholegrain, unprocessed as possible, fresh fruit veg and no processed meats. Very different shopping lists, although I still cant see that $125 contains many real meals do you have to buy dinner type food as well?

Forgot the coke thats 33 sugared items.
Notwithsanding the fact that you come across as a sanctimonious git, as well as apparently implying that frozen food should be classed as junk, I am confused by your 33 sugar/frozen count.

toilet roll - unsugared/unfrozen
vanilla yoghurt - unsugared/unfrozen
home brew kit - unsugared/unfrozen
4 cat food - unsugared/unfrozen
2 bacon - unsugared/unfrozen
luncheon meat - unsugared/unfrozen
spuds - unsugared/unfrozen
arnotts chicken shapes - unsugared/unfrozen
plush - unsugared/unfrozen
cheese twists - unsugared/unfrozen
smiths burger rings - unsugared/unfrozen
sakata crackers - unsugared/unfrozen
hamburger rolls - unsugared/unfrozen
bread - unsugared/unfrozen

So, of the things I recognise, there are 19 that are neither sugared or frozen. Total items 45. 26 potentially sugared or frozen. Of those - it is reasonable to say that one would expect beer brewing sugar to be a bit sugary - otherwise it would be crap, wouldn't it.

then there are the 10 bottles of Pepsi Max which interestingly is also unsugared (though if MrsD puts it in the back of the beer fridge it might end up frozen) :) so now we are down to 16 items (35%).

Ah well, can't all be right all the time.

Cheers,

DagBoy

PS. MrsD. thank you :D

Firstly the reason your wife set about my posts was because my posts indicated some food was expensive, a point she became very angry about, I was not the person who started attacking people.

I can see why she cannot understand my perspective on food, obviously we have very different diets but that does not give her the right to call people who eat differently gabblers/stupid etc for posting the prices of what they buy.

Dont overlook who started attacking who here:rolleyes:

As for your nutritional breakdown above you will find many of the products like yogurt/ hamburger buns are laden with sugar and much of the other food has little nutritional value.

Pepsi max contains chemicals that replace sugar and are far worse than sugar anyway. I would doubt anyone would think that was healthy!

Do you really expect yourself or your wife to come on here and attack other peoples posts and they are not supposed to speak up? Isnt that called bullying?

I am sorry if pointing our your diet is sugary/junky has hit a nerve but the point was made only to show why we may pay more for food than perhaps you do.

If you dont want people to stand up for themselves then it might be best not to attack them in the first place.

Besides what was I attaced for for listing my grocery prices exactly the same thing your wife did.

jayr Jul 20th 2004 6:26 pm

I found a list on the ATO site. I also note that condoms and personal lubricants are GST free - make one for the country.

I can't be bothered tolook through all the items yet but noted that bread is GST free, bread with sweet toppings (though not including a glaze) includes GST and bread topped with cheese is GST free.

I imagine it took hundreds of bureacrats weeks of effort to work out what was ans wasn't GST - able.

Ceri Jul 20th 2004 6:30 pm

Dagboy, check the ingredients of your bread, burger rolls etc , burger rings . cheese snacks and chicken shaped things .. bet you $10 there's sugar in a lot of those. .. I know there's sugar in the bread .. I can always taste sugar in most bread here. Actually it's hard finding anything which has no sugar in it

Probably the only things that has not got sugar in them is the cat food ( cats don't like sugar), and the bog roll .. actually that would be a good idea.. something to chew/snack on when you're in the toilet.. now there's a new invention for some budding entrepreneur.. sugared toilet roll

what is "plush" by the way? .. sounds odd. Never heard of it.

one more to go isn't it?

oh carton of Vb 34.99 ( cans 30 pk) .. on special .. not on special $38

Gst .. it was mad when it first came in .. nobody understood it, and I don't think nobody understands it now. It replaced sales tax.. and that too was odd. . ..take a bottle of coke it had something like 20 odd per cent sales tax on it before GST came in . There was no one rule for any goods.

ABC Diamond mentioned something similar a while ago but to reiterate, I went to get some Hahn Premium Light recently (good to drink if you've got to drive) and a six pack costs $10.99, a carton (24) however costs $23.99

Ceri Jul 20th 2004 6:47 pm

Reading the Ato link that Jayr posted up , I've noticed a few things:

For the person who started this thread .. your beans are gst free:D ( seeing as this was a bean thread.. don't like them myself)
and why are potted herbs taxable???.. I don't understand.. I always buy potted herbs.. so if I buy the dried pk ones .. they are free from GST.. dosen't make sense to me.

If I buy pkt peanuts it has Gst .. like "nobby's nuts".. lol ( I like my nobby's peanuts) , but if I buy raw it's Gst free.. but herbs no, it's different story for herbs.. what have pollies got against potted herbs??

madness.

Now you can see why everyone was confused when they brought in GST

how many for top place?

I attacked you? ohh please, you havent listed a single price since your first post in the first page of this thread & how many posts have you made in it? They have all been making snide comments & criticisms of other peoples opinions, choices & grocery bill  Who is attacking who for their food choices? BTW, Id love to see where I became very angry about you posting that some food was expensive. Can you show me?

Yoghurt contains sugar? Yep, it certainly does, but I notice that you bought it, so its junk food for us but good wholesome food for you? I bought fruit bars (no added colours flavours or preservatives) & you bought muslei bars, mines junk & yours is nutritious? jam isnt full of sugar? Yeah right, whatever  .

You continue to fail to read what I write. That list was NOT a typical weeks shop. As for the pepsi & some of the other stuff, ask Polly or anyone who knows us, our kids would no more be given coke or pepsi (sugared or unsugared) or some of that other stuff than we would fly them to the moon. Yes, my kids do eat savoury biscuits with cheese & have chocolate topping in their milk occasionally, so shoot me, Im such a bad mother  . Obviously yours would never eat stuff like that then? Must be hard being so high on that pedestal, do you often get nosebleeds? :D And funny how anyone would admit that buying junk food/frozen is far more expensive than buying non junk/frozen, but somehow that becomes why you pay more for food than we do?

Anyway, I get sick of saying the same thing over & over, I'll ignore from now on :) .

Ceri, yes, bread & burger rolls & savoury biscuits contain sugar, but as you said so much stuff contains sugar you would be hardpressed to find things that dont. So unless you eat meat, vegetables & nothing else each meal, you arent going to avoid it.

Oh & btw, "plush" was a soft (plush) toy that I bought for one of the boys :) .

Takes deep breath............
Well I just went back through this thread to look at your posts and MrsD's posts to see if I had somehow missed something - because from your comments it sounds like you have been reading a different thread.

Your first post listed some prices for things from your recent shopping trip. Siren's b/h points out that your prices seem expensive. You point out that it was Coles. MrsD tells PP that prices in Bris seem cheap enough to her.

You post to say that you find it amusing that people blame the high costs on shopping in a supermarket.

MrD discusses the price of bread with Ceri, puts up some prices from her docket and offers her opinion that one does not have to spend a lot of money on groceries.

You make some comment suggesting that women should be grinding wheat and making jam rather than shopping in supermarkets (not really sure I understood that one - I have to say).

Ceri suggests that people will rubbish the high prices quoted in an effort to prove that Aus is cheap.

You then make an exaggerated comment that it must be weird for those in the UK to read that one cannot get competitive priced goods in the supermarket but have to barter at the market and visit the farms - sorry - I missed who exactly it was that had posted that earlier - maybe they have since removed it? You liken it to 1940.

Ceri suggests to Ulujain that Aus is more expensive than UK and tells you not to worry if people disagree with you.

MrsD picks up on you previous exaggerated comment and points out that your shopping experience is not necessarily the norm, that it is possible to find a butcher and veg shop right next to a supermarket. She also points out she is not comparing UK/Aus but is merely listing some prices for some things to give people who are planning to come out here an idea of what they might find. She does not have a go at you for choosing to spend more than we do on groceries - she just points out that she does not care.

You then attempt a humourous reply to Megs comment. Never mind.

Then you quote MrsD and start saying that you see anger in the posts of people who don't like to see foods described as expensive. You blame lack of competition for the high prices that you get charged.

MrsD then replies pointing out that you are making assumptions about travelling all over town and also that she too is simply posting her costs and pointing out that you and Ceri no more have a monopoly on truth than does anybody else. She points out that she is not stupid enough to pay over the odds and that intelligent readers will work it out for themselves.

You then take it personally and infer that there was an implication that you are stupid and unintelligent (something about which I will not comment - except to say that I am not so stupid as to ever make such an inference myself).

You accuse her of ranting in bold (one word for emphasis does not a rant make). You seem to think she asked you or told you not to post your costs - sorry I missed that bit. You accuse MrsD of being pissed off at people who post that Aus is expensive - I think you will find that what she is pissed off at is people who peddle their own brand of truth as the only one - a bit like religious bigots who think that only their brand of religion is right. Then you accuse her of being rude - if you think that is rude you must have had a very sheltered life.

MrsD then politely points out that you are accusing her of rudeness for behaviour similar to hers. She also points out she said that she was not stupid and did not comment one way or the other about you.

Then she posts a couple of dockets so people can see some real prices from a real supermarket in a real Brisbane suburb. No comment on whether items are cheap or not - simply some example facts.

She even points out that it is mostly beer kit, cat food and junk food.

At this point you chose to post your sanctimonious comment about our diet and point out there are no "dinner" foods. If you want an example of rude then look no further. You very kindly (but completely incorrectly) anaylse our diet as well - pointing out that we have surpassed your junk food quota for the year in a single shop. Must be a laugh a minute at your place.

Someone makes a flippant comment about your post and you start a little slanging match with them

MrsD points out again (for the hard of thinking) that those are not bought from Coles.

MrsD points out again that it is not a typical shop - but then it was never posted as such.

A few posts from MrsD about bread and tampons and snags, then I post to point out your inconsistencies etc.

You then accuse MrsD of setting about you and start discussung nutritional values. I never said that the food on our docket was high nutrition - just that when it comes to frozen and sugar you cannot count. I am certainly not bullying you - I am defending my wife against your attacks - (yeah - like she needs my help).

No nerves hit here - interestingly that docket is not indicative of our entire diet. I only wish ww got a beer kit every week.

Cheers,

I knew you were out for a fight as soon as you came back with the I bought jarlsberg post ;) But you didnt did you? :D as the shopping docket proves, you were just peed off that I posted my prices and healthy food is not cheap here.

I dont give a hoot what you feed your kids, I said MY kids would be climbing the walls if I fed them that lot of shit, so if you dont mind I will continue to post and eat whatever I fancy.

Australian GST, British VAT...what's the difference?

I pay 8.25% on top of everything bar produce here in Texas too. I mean everything, internet conenctions, phone bills, nappies, tampons, etc

Even my plane tickets to get out of the US had tax applied to them.

Mrs D - You are one of the 'Good Guy's'; but on this occasion you've been a very naughty girl!:D

Now go to your room and write by hand:-

'I must not respond to trolls or troll-like posts' 100 times.:lecture:

If you do this again the punishment will be more severe:scared:

I only looked at this thread to see why so many responses appeared on a thread about beans.

The brand lil-lets - no, I've never seen them here.
tampons without carboard tubes like lilets - yes, there are plenty of different brands.

Beans, beans They're good for your heart
The more you eat the more you fart

So eat baked beans with every meal

It's not the quantity, it's the quality, so I vote for Heinz.

no this is woolies.. jaffa cakes are in bilo.
two people and two cats.

fish and prawns are frozen .. that will last weeks
meat is for hubby for the freezer ( I don't eat meat)

I am not a sweet person.. I don't buy many sweet things.. but I do like my crisps.. I bought one indvidual bag which should last a week, maybe a week and a half.

Hubby is a way on business.. otherwise my bill would have included choc's .. he's the one who likes chocs

$163.. I think that's damn expensive for two people.. this does not include things I buy in the week - milk and bread of course

$7.98 for tomatoes a kilo!
and coffee is just as bad

shampoo and conditioner , bread, potatoes were on offer this week
