'Grooming tips' upset bank staff
A leading Australian bank has been criticised for offering its staff advice on their personal appearance.
The guide reportedly offered tips on haircuts and length of ties as well as choice of underwear and aftershave.
underwear? wtf?!
Yes I know what it is, but does your employer need to know what sort of kecks you've got on?

You forgot to mention that women are not allowed to wear "shiny" tights as it makes their legs look too fat.. PMSL.. When i heard that remark on the car radio news my jaw dropped.

In the 1800's, male staff at the Bank of England were allowed to have facial hair, as long as they didnt have it during office hours!

I wear a uniform to work and 10 years ago the girls were told by the nazi managment that we had to wear 'flesh coloured bras' as black would show thru' the blouse. (it didn't but anyway).

Now for Catch 22 - what happens if you are black. Your flesh is black so you wear a black bra but you can't because it shows thru. Funnily enough after a week with the black girls up in arms we were allowed to wear what we liked.

Two years ago we all got a memo saying that

"We are requesting that you do not wear novelty underwear during the Christmas period. To clarify - socks with santa, reindeers and and any other Christmas symbol will not be permitted. We are also reminding the males in particular that novelty underwear may be in breach of hygiene regulations and ask that you wear regulation underwear. Ladies are asked not to wear Xmas decorations as earrings or in their hair as does not conform to uniform standards and may offend our customers who are of other faiths and do not celebrate Christmas" FFS

Red rag to a bull that one and 2 days later they had to retract it.

Our pony tails have to be no longer than 6 inches long (Don't bother with the jokes - I've heard them all ) and we do actually have some nutter going around with a ruler measuring some she thinks are too long. If we see her coming we run to the loos to hide

Glad to hear certain employers in Australia are being just as stupid as ones in the UK. Make us feel right at home.

Got to admit that the very fact the Commonwealth thinks it can tell its female staff what colour bra to wear, has got to be enough to put some people off banking with them. Flaming cheek!! Wonder if they are going to check everyone each day....perverts!

FWIW, there was a study reported in the UK press (broadsheets) over the weekend. It showed that what a woman wore at work affected the perception of that person. First a lady dressed 'conservatively' for group 1 and secondly she dressed 'provacatively' for group 2 (short skirt, hint of cleavage, heavily massacred eyeballs etc). Guess what? The perception of lady #2 was that she was less competent at her job and she was taken less seriously - but it was the same person dressed differently.

The conclusion was that employers probably need some input into what their staff wore and that dress style does matter. Try telling teenagers that they should dress conservatively for an interview though! And have you noticed how many males turn up for trials in a suit? He couldn't possibly have committed that crime, could he?

That's still the case in the police in the UK. You're not allowed to 'grow' a beard on working time, but you are allowed to come back with a fully grown beard from leave or whatever.

I take your point but telling staff what underwear they should wear is a step too far IMO.

Regarding dressing provocatively the people who did the study have obviously never seen my uniform. We were all given a new uniform last year. It is a 'designer uniform' and the designer quite blatantly at a news conference stated that ''he wanted to bring the sex back into the unifomr".

As a result our skirts were shortened by 2 inches, everything is 'fitted' to accentuate the body form and the blouse buttons start so low you show cleavage and the blouses are now see thru. We have scarves to tuck in but the buttons are so low the scarf often loosens. We have to wear shoes with heels and make up.

So according to this study the perception of us is that we are less competent through no fault of our own.

On another point I used to do recruitment and a guy turned up for his interview and tests in a pair of frayed denim shorts and a vest. He was actually Ozzie There was a huge row amongst us because myself and a couple of others felt he should have made an effort with appearance but some others said he ticked all the other boxes and should get the job.

How contradictory is that

What about the English school that banned a girl for 2 days last week because she refused to remove a crucifix but they allow Sikh pupils to bring ceremonial daggers - headteacher said the crucifix was merely decorational but the dagger was 'religiously significant'. Education authority, Church and parents up in arms but head refuses to budge. There has also been the usual annual round of headteachers in primary schools banning Christmas carols for fear of offending other religions. :scared:
