Baggage allowance when you do a wee stop over ??
Does anyone know if you still can claim the 40kg baggage allowance if you stop over for a few days ?
We are hoping to spend a few days in Singapore on the way across, we are leaving from Scotland and I'm also wondering about the baggage allowance from here to London if we have to leve from there ???
Any help would be great
Cheers

From previous threads, it seems if you stopover you forfeit the extra baggage allowance, if flying via the East.
If flying via the West, you get 46kg no matter what you do of course.

We flew out with SA last year and stopped off in Singapore and Thailand for nearly a month. There was no problem with the extra baggage allowance, we just made sure we had it in writing to show when we checked in again and resumed our journey.
I think you might have problems from Scotland to London unless you can get it ticketed straight through, i.e. you buy the whole flight Scotland to Oz with SA but of course it won't be an actual SA flight on the UK internal flight. I know that's what you do if you fly from Ireland.

We emigrated to Perth in April with a stopover in Singapore. The first part was booked Edinburgh to LHR then on to Singapore with BA and we used our airmiles + cash to upgrade to Club World. It was worth it, as I have a bad back and at least I could stretch out a bit. After a two day stopover in Singapore, we flew with Qantas in Economy.
We were allowed up to 60 kgs each in the Club World on BA, but only had 40 kgs each. When we booked, we asked Qantas if we would be allowed the double baggage allowance, given that we were starting off in Club World and continuing our emigration via Singapore with them. They said it would be okay, however, when we went to check in at Qantas Singapore we had a bit of a shock.
The check in man was unmoved and said we were only allowed 20kgs each. We explained what we had been told by the Qantas rep when we booked that we would be starting off in Club and emigrating, but he said it made no difference. We had to pay £300 excess baggage allowance!!
Apparently this is waived if you come in from the USA as they are allowed double! Qantas are totally unforgiving and we won't be flying with them again!
My advice is to get some sort of written documentation stating what baggage allowance you are allowed, then there will be no misunderstanding. Different airlines have different allowances so be careful who you fly with if you split the journey up and always double check and don't take anything for granted. There are no hard and fast rules at the end of the day. Sometimes, it would appear if the check-in staff have got out of bed the wrong side you will have to pay the excess, other times you might not.
Nearly everyone has a different story....some get extra baggage allowances, some don't!
Just get it written in blood if you can!!
Best of Luck,

What a bummer!!! I think the woman who checked us in in Singapore would have taken the same tack if we hadn't had it in writing, but once we produced the e-mail (it had taken me a couple of e-mail enquiries to get a response, but the e-mail was addressed to me answering my specific question) they couldn't really argue.

Sorry Phoenix, just realised your hassle was with Qantas which doesn't surprise me. I will NEVER, EVERY fly either Qantas or BA again after my last experience.

Re: Baggage allowance when you do a wee stop over ??
What really cheesed us off was that Qantas and BA are part of the same 'Alliance', so in theory, you would have thought they would take into consideration the first part of the journey we had been given a bigger baggage allowance. It was not as if we had been over the limit either, in fact the BA guy said how light we were, given we were emigrating.
This made no difference whatsoever to the Qantas check-in. We even showed them all our documentation to prove we were emigrating, but he wouldn't relent. He allowed 20kgs and we had 40 kgs. On the BA flight we could have had 60kgs, so just as well we didn't have the full amount.....it would have been even more!
What is worse, he actually said if we were coming from the USA we would have a bigger allowance and if we had booked the ticket using Qantas all the way and not had a stopover, they would have let us have the extra too!
It really rankles with me that they are not consistent and I am sure a lot of people may take it for granted they can stopover and get the allowance, then they find they get clobbered with an excess baggage fine! It would appear some make allowances, some are just bloody-minded and like to rain on your parade!
Just when we thought it couldn't get worse, we landed in Perth only to find a litre of Single Malt Whisky had smashed inside one of the cases! The contents were ruined, so we may as well have thrown them away in Singapore and not paid the excess!! :curse:
We smelled like a couple of alkies, but thankfully we got through customs okay - I think they felt sorry for us!!
You have to laugh eh!

People are always complaining on here about the airlines and how they should be entitled to extra baggage because they are emigrating. You didn't expect the Aussie govt to pay for your visas, no-one else picked up the tab for shipping the rest of your worldly goods, so why should the airlines be any different! Fair enough give it a go, if they let you off with it then great, otherwise take it on the chin and pay up...no one forced you to emigrate!

The problem is not that you had a stopver but that your travel was booked on 2 seperate tickets. If all your travel was booked on the one ticket the highest baggage allowance would apply for the whole journey. Because it wasn't you were only entitled to 20kg for the SIN - PER leg. Regardless of what the Qantas rep told you, without having it in writing the check in agent was 100% correct as far as the rules go. If you wanted a business class allowance all the way to Perth, paying the business class fare would've got it!

The reason for posting is to make others aware that airlines are most certainly NOT consistent in their baggage allowance and it does vary from airline to airline and therefore forewarned is forearmed. There is a lot of misinformation out there and knowing the pitfalls can be helpful. Emigrating is not like going on holiday - people have children, personal documentation and valuables that they wouldn't normally travel with or want to trust to send in a shipment and most airlines do make allowances and understand that this is usually an exceptional circumstance. The 20kgs Qantas gives is a pathetically small amount compared with other airlines and sometimes if people have a stopover and change flights, they may not be aware the baggage allowances may be different.
By the way....who rattled your cage?

Re: Baggage allowance when you do a wee stop over ??
Every airline flying between UK and Asia and onwards to Aus is giving economy passengers an allowance of either 20 or 23kg. As I said before the problem is not the stopover, you flew in business class from London to Singapore therefore you had a higher baggage allowance. Even if you hadn't left the airport you still wouldn't have been entitled to more than 20kg on the Perth leg....but you probably would have gotten away with it because BA would've likely checked your bags through.
As far as I know only Singapore Airlines does double baggage allowance when arranged direct with the airline, and the stopover doesn't affect that, and maybe Emirates through some 3rd parties.

Re: Baggage allowance when you do a wee stop over ??
Singapore airlines (SQ) and Emirates (EK) are the only airlines which now offers a double allowance on an unused PR visa. Yet still people are posting time and time again that its unfair that they can't get it with other airlines, or that its shocking that since they used it 2 years ago on a "validation" (aka holiday) they cant get it now, or that they are on a temp visa and its morally silly.
Its been a consistent policy with SQ and EK from the outset.
Whilst anyone could get more allowance by flying via the USA, the extra expense and time of doing that would probably be offset by just paying excess baggage or another shipper 110GBP per 25kg.

The way things are in the industry, and depending on how much grief this policy is causing check in agents and customer service staff I wouldn't be surprised if it is withdrawn soon.

Qantas' allowance is totally standard.

As I stated before, we had 40kgs which was under the 60 kg allowance flying BA Club and the correct amount when emigrating according to Qantas helpline. Oh...and by the way, we weren't trying to get away with anything! We were led to believe by Qantas, that we would be allowed to take that amount onto the ongoing flight, as we were emigrating.
I have read on this and other sites, that several of the airlines double their allowances for emigrants, therefore I had no reason to think any differently, particularly as we telephoned Qantas before our flight, just to make sure.
The information I posted is about our personal experience and is only intended to prevent others from making the same mistake.
I am new to this site and whilst you and 'Centurion' may be a couple of Humpty Dumpties concerning all matters of emigration and Qantas policy, specifically regarding baggage allowance, stopovers, connecting flights, etc. etc. ad infinitum, some of us are just occasional travellers and my comments were intended for the OP and those who are not so worldly wise.
This is my last post, as I find the last two responses particularly brusque and may I say patronising, especially to those of us who are just trying to give some friendly advice based on our experience.
