Use a shiopping company like excess baggage or sevenseas worldwide - I fly regularly and its vey expensive to use the airlines (with a few exceptions)

Unless you just happen to be flying business or first, taking your stuff on board with you will cost a small fortune... even if it's 'unaccompanied baggage'. A really good and reliable way to do it is to send it using a company called Tudor Freight. They'll pick it up from your door and deliver it either to the Airport in Australia where you can collect it... or to your door in Aus if you don't mind paying a bit extra. You can arrange it all through their website which is - Tudorfreight.com. I've used them a few times now and they've been brilliant every time. I hope this helps!

Rachael.

I have just reserved tickets through IOM have already validated but am booking one way with them cheap seats with Qantas and we get 40kg each? Just hope I do not turn up at the airport and they revoke there promise? I have it in writing that we get 40kg booking with IOM. Anyone else tried this,

I've just seen the other threads about baggage allowance with SIA, I'm going on a reccie in Jan to validate my PR visa and didn't realise it meant I wouldnt get the 40kg allowance when I finally go
Does goig via USA give you the extra allowance as standard or will I not get that extra allowance either because I will have validated my visa?
Cheers,
WW

Yes, 46 kg is the standard allowance for flying through the USA. It is granted irrespective of visa, and you don't need special permission. I have done it several times now, and flying through San Francisco is a breeze, if slightly boring, as there's not much to do in the airport. Beware of flying via LA though, as Transit speeds have been known to separate people from their luggage.
Also, some airlines - well, United - allow you to upgrade your baggage allowance to two bags of 32 kg each - a stonking 64 kg - for a small additional fee. It was US$50 per bag when I flew last time.
