Re: Australia, Republic, change flag, reduce immigration.
I reckon australia has become much less racist.
I first came here in 87 for a year and I remember seeing T-shirts in the shops, one was "Ski the Slopes" which showed someone skiing over a load of asians. The other one was "Life's like that" showing an aboriginal on the side of the road who had just been knocked down by a road train.
Couldn't get away with that now.

Exactly.Wonder why Australia has had this debate around what form the flag should take, when nations like Canada and to a slightly lesser extent old Rhodesia, replaced their Union Jack ensigns by quite acceptable alternative flags?

I think the difference is that Canada must have wanted to change it, but Australia, in the majority, doesn't want to change it.

republic - yes
reduce immigration - no - as long as a benefit to australia
change flag - yes - would love Australia to have its own unique, easily identifiable, great flag like the UK, USA, Canada, China, Japan etc that represents Australia a lot better. We have heaps of symbols, names, institutions etc that reflect British settlement of Australia - I'm sure if we change the flag we are not rejecting our past, just reflecting reality and improving things. I think if people were given viable alternatives and it was taken slowly then the majority would agree eventually. In a few hundreds years they would look back and thank us for the great flag - the old one would be remembered and respected for the role it played in our birth and initial growth. Wales got a new flag in 1959 and no longer used the England and Wales St George's cross as their flag, thus leaving it solely to the English - seems to have worked ok?
