Miss the nights in Scotland where it is still light at 11 and the sky lightens again at about 1.30am - That it though!

No i dont think so either. Nice country, nice people but over rated.

The weather isnt all its cracked up to be, house prices are ridiculous and increasing, day to day living expenses are ridiculous and increasing. In todays money exchange the £ is getting trashed.

But hey, apart from that I'm sure it was peachy.

You mixed up almost all of that. You are talking about 1920-30s I guess.
And Russia is too big to be the same in all its parts. There always were places where there was comfortable to live in and where the living was shite. As for me, there is no contry in the world that is the best. Each to their own.

Anyway, the comment about russians drinking vodka all the day is funny :)

Whilst there were famines through the 1920s there were also many famines post-WWII - see this link:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drought...a_and_the_USSR

Deportations occured post-WWII also, in response to uprisings - for example the Chechens, many of whom died without ever returning to their homeland, and others returned after a decade or more of exile- see this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chechenya

Yes obviously Russia is too large to be the same all over, as is Australia - and most countries in fact, and things are also hugely influenced by incomes & expectations etc etc. I made those points originally to contest another poster's assertion that Russia was the 'best' country in the world.

Take it to The Lounge if you'd like to carry on and I'll see if I can find time to play later, call it a community service. Think of something nice and original though.

Something that cannot be changed is the weather and I think a lot of people in the UK underestimate how much we need the sun to survive and progress. I don't think its healthy to live in the UK with so little sun, especially with increasing indoor jobs, a few holidays a year just doesn't cut it. As time goes on we'll realise how important good weather is for our health and we'll see more reports like this. You and your future familys health aside, people just generally better in nice weather, people are slightly more positive and energetic. This helps the country grow and progress faster, just look at the statistics or the views in Oz's city. There's other stuff, but you get the point... UK is nice country but Oz has overtaken it and the gap is widening.

What a load of bollox!

The weather in Australia is as you think for say 3/4 months of the year. Christmas time when everyone is happier anyway. Summer time when the kids are of school for 8 weeks. Of course they are happier. Take the glossy holiday brochure out of your backside and look at the pictures again. In all probability pictures taken in Dec/Jan/Feb and aimed at getting you there.

Now take a look at the suicide rates in Australia and tell me that aussies feel better because of the sunshine! Never read so much crap! Aussies winge and are as unhappy about day to day life as anyone on the planet. House prices, food prices, crime, pollution, fuel prices, road conditions, drought, rain, Immigrants, politicians etc etc. They winge about it all. They winge about the bloody sun and its cancer causing rays and stay out of it for gods sake! It is no greener than the UK -well some parts are!

SAD - yeah sad alright. Sad if ya think moving to australia will do away with all your worries and put a permanent smile on your face.

How has OZ taken over the UK?

Yes you are right. But my point was that you were referering to 50s/60s when there was (relatively :) ) calm time for russians. And the dictator who ruled by force and fear died in 1955. I can't recall that there were so many deaths from famine in 50s/60s. But USSR govt used to suppress the info and maybe something has emerged recently.

Great knowledge of Russian history! Why are you so interested? Are you a historian?
Here in Russia we have a stereotype of Brits like you have about us drinking vodka ;) We say you are so proud of your country that you dont know anything about the other ones and even cant say where France is on the world's map :D
