Aussie taxation
Does anyone have a book or website giving the basic details of Australian taxation procedures, both at the federal and state level?
I just want to start my education now, before the reality hits me!

No State taxes yet, though the States do collect revenue from driving licences, parking infringements etc. Federal tax http://www.ato.gov.au
Ernst & Young http://www.ey.com used to have a downloadable pdf called the global executive which compared international tax regimes.

Rog,
Which tax(es) are you thinking of? Income tax for individuals? Or for companies? Goods and services tax? Payroll taxes?
If you want me to send you some free tax factsheets have a look here:

Stan,
The States and Territories do administer Payroll Taxes, Stamp Duty, and a few others.
I believe that the Federal Government also sees the GST as a State tax (mainly because the proceeds are distributed to the States and Territories), even though it is clearly a Commonwealth impost.
Best regards.

Alan:
Thanks - I will look at your site. The taxes I'm talking about are individual's taxes. I read recently about State taxes, and hadn't heard of *them* so got a bit worried!

I can see you are a bit of an expert with the tax and immigration stuff and I need a bit of help.
I bought an investment property late last year and I guess I will need to do an Oz tax return after 30/6. Do I need to get a TFN now ? Also we will be there in Sept under our PR visas so will I need another or different TFN then ? I did have a TFN 8 years ago when I was on a working holiday would that still be valid ? And finally but most importantly where can I find an accountant in Oz to do my tax return for the YE 30/6 or can I wait until I get there in Sept to sort it all out ?
Many thanks
Simon
