You're using the wrong pubs mate. they are certainly different from the UK ones, but they still have character (and characters!) and are worth a go. Maybe you are using the ones in city centres? Try some of the more remote ones......had some fantastic evenings in small-town pubs...... Best one I found was in Queenstown, Tas, full of miners, great sense of humour & surprisingly willing to accept a pommie sheila into the bar!

You are spot on most are down market working mens clubs with strippers , the fake Irish and Brit Pubs here are the only ones worth going in.

Most Aussie pubs are like this, like UK working mens clubs but worse - not very family friendly, but as PB says the fake Irish/British ones can be decent. The Pig & Whistle chain is preety good (is this national?)

Apart from the "immitation" Pom pubs, the nearest you will get to a family Pom pub is a club. Clubs have emptied pubs because clubs have cheaper drinks and meals subsidised by poker machines and the like in the main.
Can not say I like any of the above, rather drink in the comfort of my home thanks.

these are the clubs eg. RSL, "country club". I like them - its a kind of one stop shop. If you're mates are there then you can't complain.
If there are no winebars or taverns or otherwise in your part of town why not try try the "hotels"??

Agree with that. Found some great pubs with great grub up in the Adelaide Hills (sorry was too p***ed to remember where they were). One we went to a few times had dominoes a roaring fire and fit barmen and really good grub (including the most delicious fillet mignon). I believe they drew a decent schooner as well. I will find out it's name and location. Pig and Whistle is a chain and there are also Slug and Lettuces in Adelaide (Salisbury) But in UK the big warehousy, pretentious soul-less chains are taking over in the City Centres - lots of the old pubs in my home town (Bath) have been ripped out and tarted up. But again go to the country and you get the "real thing" just like in Oz . Mind you I have seen some pretty rough dives in Oz as I have in England.

An Aussie pub is about as welcoming as Klan is to a blackman , go inland in Australia or up north in WA and see the Klan at work , bars with Abos caged on one side while the whites drink in the other side.

What's wrong with a huge room full of poker machines and naked women who sell raffle tickets by doing hand-stands with frozen chickens as first prize? ;-)
