Default Aus vs Uk Tax Calculator v1.0

1) To use:

Download the zip file and extract the MS Excel file.

(If you haven't got winzip, search for winzip in google. Its a file compression program. Expats do not allow me to upload a xls file directly..)

Enter your UK and Aussie current/expectant gross salaries and, UK tax code (like so):

eg 456L - 4560 (drop last letter, add 0)

2)To follow

a) Graphs
b) Ni and Super calc
c) cost of living

Wasn't sure if the tax brackets are calculated correctly, so spot a mistake, let me know. I assumed that the taxable salary is broken in to chunks.

Badge,

This is good, but it doesn't factor in the Medicare Levy, or various tax credits (see the attached) that can reduce the final tax bill.

Short of actually processing a dummy UK and Australia Tax Return and computing the overall income tax bill it is very difficult to come up with a model that picks up all the available tax credits in the UK and Australia so that one can truly compare like with like - maybe this is an assignment in the offing for a Uni student somewhere!

Best regards.

Thanks Alan, even once I allow for Medicare, Super and UK NI it can only at best serve as a guide I guess..

I am afraid that your spreadsheet is wrong - just check it on the ATO website tax calculator. (I originally calculated like you assuming it worked like the UK)

This is a nice simple one, which I know is correct as Mr Pookin's wages match up exactly!
