Australasia is the area that includes Australia, New Zealand, New Guinea, and the many smaller islands in the vicinity, most of which are the eastern part of Indonesia. The name was coined by Charles de Brosses in Histoire des navigations aux terres australes (1756)

I personally think this is correct geographically, I would not necessarily say that Australia is in Asia, it is the only country that is an island is a continent. Australia is not part of Asia, although economically it may well want to be. I guess it could be, as Jack says, be part of the Asia-Pacifim area, but I would not say it is Asia per se.

Apparently people from the UK who have overstayed their visas make up the largest amount of illegal immigrants in Australia....

Personally I dont care what colour, creed or race people are as long as we dont see a repeat of what's happening in the UK where you're not even allowed a Xmas tree in a charity shop window for fear of "upsetting" other religions (as yes, this actually happened last Xmas just down the road in Dymchurch).

I hope that we will be able to integrate into the Australian culture and will certainly not be flying the England flag outside our house (although will wear our England shirts when the footie is on!).

Not all sweetness with Malaysia. Howard still has delusions of being Deputy Dawg to Bush and quite rightly some of the neighbours are annoyed at this.

http://www.smh.com.au/news/National/...815670281.html

The Malaysian Prime Minister, Abdullah Badawi, declined to invite Australia to the East Asian summit it will host later this year during his talks with the Prime Minister, John Howard, in Canberra yesterday, though the two leaders agreed to begin negotiations on a free trade pact.

The failure of the Federal Government to secure an invitation prompted accusations from Labor that Mr Howard's refusal to sign ASEAN's Treaty of Amity and Co-operation, a non-aggression pact already signed by China, Japan and South Korea, had jeopardised Australia's chances of inclusion in the new regional economic community.

Asia is'nt one big group of countries that are all the same. For example Japan and Pakistan are both Asian countries, but most Pakistanies and Japanese would think that they have very little in common and are both very different countries, peoples and cultures.

Quite correct there wombat, Lets get this straight, The Asians we are talking about in this country are predomantly South East Asians. They are as far as I'm concerned, one of the best groups of migrants I've ever had the privilege of getting to know. In fact more power to them. They assimilate beautifuly, They raise the Education levels, they create wealth, They in fact are strengthening this country at a rapid rate.

I wish I could be around in 100 years to see what this country becomes, But I predict one thing, It will be very much stronger for these asian migrants, I bet they will still have the westminster system, and speak english with an aussie accent. Australia may even be knocking over Americans dominance of the world by then, thanks to the asians ;) More credit to them on knowing which side of their bread is buttered.

I have an England flag (st. george's cross) A4 size in the window of my flat, but in another window the missis has her aussie flag... Nothing wrong with that. I'm proud of my English background and I love my family back in England. Also, when sporting events such as Rugby world cup, Euro 2004 and the upcoming ashes are on it's a bit of a talking point for guests we may be entertaining at our home.

And the christmas plays that did go ahead, the parents were banned from using videocameras for fear that the tape may end up in the hands of a kiddiefiddler....

Wombat, whilst you dont like people sterotyping the Aussies why do you insist on stereotyping all poms as wingers?

I have been subject to hatred by an aussie in south australia.

I am a white pommie and he is a second generation scot it must have been bred into him.

It was weird - really old fashion stuff!

Oh but he had a mullet so I guess it limited his IQ a little. :)
