Between July 2001 and June 2002 1,730 migrated to Australia from Northern America = 1.9% of the total. (88,900)

As comparisons for the same period:
New Zealand 15,663 17.6%
United Kingdom 8,749 9.8%
China 6,708 7.5%
South Africa 5,714 6.4%
India 5,091 5.7%
Indonesia 4,221 4.7%
Philippines 2,837 3.2%

How long do you think it would take for Australia to hit Asia?
It has been estimated that Australia will be part of Asia in about 40 million years.

Will any other parts of Australia drift apart?
Large continents tend to split apart after a long time, because hot areas in the mantle below them cause the crust to get thin, and start moving away from the hot areas. This creates a new spreading ridge, and the continent becomes two smaller continents. It is possible that this will happen to Australia at some time in the future, though probably not in your life time.
Probably not!!! What do they mean, probably not in our lifetime  . I think we'd have heard something about it by now if it was going to happen in our lifetime.

Cheers,
JTL

Unlike the Brits, Americans are not desperate to leave our country in great numbers, for Australia or anywhere else for that matter. To the poster who thinks Brits who fear the "asian menace" should move to the US- you've obviously never been to the US or you'd know its more diverse and multicultural than Aust, although Aust is thankfully starting to catch up.
To the poster wondering about US migration to Aust- American immigration to Australia is very small. However, Australia is hardly foreign to Americans, as it consistantly rates as the #1 holiday goal destination by Americans. The only thing that stops many of them is the high cost of plane tix. Incidentally, other than as a great holiday destination, the 2nd most common impression of Australia by Americans is that its the most racist developed nation in the world. Many African-Americans and Latin-Americans I know refuse to visit or have returned with impressions of Aust as similar to the rural deep South of the US. (e.g. The actor Samuel Jackson recently remarked about the 'racist vibe' in Sydney when he was filming there in the late 90's). As someone who has lived in Sydney, loves Australia & knows most Aussies welcome diversity, it does get hard to defend when you read some of the ignorant biggoted posts on this site, such as that of the original poster.

Seems we are doing a good job of keeping out the average ignorant Yank and bigoted African-Americans and Latin-Americans then - damaged goods. Bring on the Sudanese please.

Fabulous news!!
I was just getting that 'glad all over feeling' (being part of a mixed marriage makes you hanker after true multiculturalism) when I read the post about Australia (according to Americans) is the 'most racist developed country' (excuse if misquoted).
This then brings all the doubts back!!

Im on my way to OZ via Asia and its something that worries me. I met a self confessed rascist in a bar in thailand the other night. He was the most disgusting person ive ever talked to.. my girlfriend tried to give him a moral bashing but got nowhere. The aussie behind the bar said theres lots of people like him in Aus. And the worst thing of all was he was from Melbourne which is meant to be the coolest place in Oz... People like that can make you really sick of a place so i hope its an isolated incident..

I've always found that there's no point in trying to enter into any kind of intelligent debate with racists. They are coming from a base of such profound ignorance - i.e that the colour of skin can somehow intrinsically affect how intelligent you are/whether your'e a scrounger/whether you will pollute the environment etc etc that it's like debating with a 18 month old.

To a certain extent they make me laugh - until it becomes aggressive.

Well.... I'm not sure where I work is so representative. Actually, haven't got a clue.
And they're not that great, they are racist against aboriginals. An aboriginal girl came in looking for work last week, handed in her CV(great CV for someone wanting to do unskilled work for minimum wage..), got invitied to an interview(I don't think they would've invited her if they'd know, but not sure). When she left after the interview, HR manager checked to see who drove her(she got in a car with someone). Haven't got a clue why. Someone else made a remark, I said something like 'she's really nice, got a good cv), and he said something like 'oh, I could write a very nice CV too" Grrrrrrrrrrr.
And there have been other 'incidents' too.

I can't compare levels of racism. I've never lived in very multicultural societies(except in an outback town in northwest WA, lots of racism there to aboriginals), not by choice or anything though! And have also therefore never had 'multicultural' friends who tell me stuff that happens to them.

I'm sure 'asians' have a reasonable chance of getting discriminated against in Perth, but as I said, I can't compare, I can't say it will be worse or better than somewhere else.

Oh geez, this has become a very long and messy post. :o

In case anyones getting scared, we've been here in Brisbane 8 months now. Not one single racist incident. Mrs JTL is HKese, I'm Scots/Irish. When we worked in melbourne a few years ago we got 2 incidents in about 6 months, neither particularly scary, just locals being idiots.

Its funny that my mum thought it was a good idea that we moved away from Northern Ireland to avoid the racism . We had one stupid white van load of workers shout abuse at us once in Northern Ireland in 3 years of living there.

Two lots of abuse in Melbourne in a total of 6 months

0 in Brisbane in 8 months so far. :)

Cheers, JTL

Lol! Though not really.... it's a very sad state of affairs that people are scared of others because of the colour of their skin....

Btw, here in Perth (near where I work), I also see a lot of muslims(there's a muslim school in Thornlie), some womem even with burka's, or something that comes close. I also see buddists(with the orange robes?).

But don't worry guys, you won't see them in the popular (expensive) 'british' suburbs

Btw, I don't notice Perth is full of 'poms'. THough there were slightly more English accents when I went to Joondalup shopping centre :D

Geez, what a thread to start, who cares?!!!! (well, obviously some do...)

a mate of mine who,s a removalist in perth Reckons Joondalup, is turning into a "pommie gehetto" ................ mm

Its amazing the amount of posters on here who say they are coming to Australia to get away from all the bloody immigrants in the UK.

So their solution is to become an immigrant in a country of immigrants! :D

Oh, and in answer to the OP. Its only natural, as Oz is part of Asia (not Europe), once the artificial immigration boundaries to asians were withdrawn, the influx of asians would far exceed those of europeans. It will continue to do so.

It adds to the diversity, and the skill pool of the country and I see no problem with it, provided everyone who comes here is commited to being australian, and doesn't try to import the problems and bigotry from their homelands here. Melbournians have experienced imported gangland warfare.

Cheers,
JTL

I agree, but most of the people with their knickers in a twist saying that they are trying to escape immigrants are escaping from illegal immigrants. I don't think people are that stupid..(!)
