Arrh! Don't talk about queues at supermarkets . I hate with a passion the do it yourself checkouts at Tesco's. I had to go through one of them with a full trolley load early on Saturday morning because the human checkouts hadn't turned up. There was a huge queue to use them and then the irritation of having to scan some goods, then pack some goods, etc, else the groceries get destroyed on the rollers and overflowing packing area. Grrrrr!

There should be someone available who, if you ask nicely, will open a checkout for you. I used to go to the tescos in York, in a different life early hours of the morning and if they didn't have a normal checkout open I'd ask whoever was wandering about near the self service area.

No way I would be putting a full trolley through self service.. I'd rather walk out and leave it sitting there.

The most that our local Tescos will usually do is scan the items for you while you pack - which is fine by me. But last Saturday they weren't even prepared to do that.

I felt like the abandoning the trolley and walking out but after spending the best part of 45 mins picking the items, it didn't seem like a wise move. So I just put on a brave face and waited for my turn while basking in the sense of whinging camaraderie amongst everyone else in the queue. ...It's a bit like BE really.

On a trip to the UK a while back I went to a supermarket and bought some stuff and was chatting to my Mum at the check out. The check out chic didnt seem that impressed (at least what I could tell through the grunts and sighs) when I looked a bit bemused when she had finished scanning everything and the whole shop ended up at the end of the conveyor.

Having your shopping packed for you is definately an Australian plus that you can get used to.

You don't have to prove flights. In fact DIAC's usual advice is DO NOT sell your hosue/dog/furniture/children or book flights until you are certain your visa will be granted.
