But surely if you really wanted to be a citizen wouldn't you just wait as long as it took to become one?

Do a private ceremony once you've got the paperwork if time is of the essence.

I had a vague plan to work internationally for a couple of years soon after citizenship - probably (ironically) at an Australian International School (which is why I get so cross with the pseudo "You-are-just-shafting-my-beloved-Australia-for-a-passport-and-are-not-a-true-Australian-like-I-am/will-be".
I tell you, none so righteous as born-again Christians or born-again Australians.)

It will all just have to wait for a few more months. Which may not be a bad thing.

It's not something that is widely publicised. I think (from memory), I found out about it during a phone call to my local council.

I've just found out that you can do it at any Australian Embassy also.

That's interesting. So in theory (I take it), you could have received you letter from the minister, be out of the country and go to the local OZ embassy to complete the citizenship process then? I wonder if it applies to consulates as well?

Where did you find that out?

If you started asking for something like that, there is a real risk your approval could be cancelled.

So, what are the requirements for applying for PR? Is there an assessment process or do you qaulify if you have been in the country for so long etc?

For permanent residence : start at http://www.immi.gov.au
No automatic PR for long residents, sorry.

For citizenship, if you have PR:

I can't understand this.

You apply to work in an Australian International School on a 2 year contract with a view to coming back to Australia. How can this be viewed negatively?

Are you really supposed to pledge that you won't leave the country?

School years - i.e. academic years - don't run to suit delays caused by red tape and bureacratic nightmares.
