Default Applying for Citizenship

Hi there,

We arrived in WA in March of this year. We validated our visas in April 2005.

Our short term plan is to apply for Citizenship at the earliest opportunity. My understand is that we will still be able to fall into the 2 year rule but do we need to have owned a property for a certain period of time and how long does it take to apply and be granted citizenship.

This is very important to us as we would definately not return to the UK before we had been granted Citizenship. We do hope that we won't be returning but we trying to make a plan for the next few years at least.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Owning property is not a requirement.

Usually somewhere between 4-6 months but some cases take more or less time. That could be different in future.

Just to clarify, once you've had the interview, in terms of citizenship, is that it? You don't have to stay for the ceremony do you? Or does the ceremony have to completed before you are a citizen?
i.e. it's more than ceremonial!

no, you do not become a citizen until youve had the ceremony and said the pledge/oath, then you are a citizen.

You are definitely NOT a Citizen until you've been to the ceremony. I think that in special circumstances (i.e. something life threatening) you might be able to get a private ceremony, but in the main you just have to wait your turn.

I have also heard there is a test to take now to get Citizenship. Questions and test.
