Help me decide please.

I want to open an account before we go so I can transfer some money for when we arrive in Perth and I have narrowed it down to either ANZ or Westpac.

Can anyone who has opened either from the UK tell me how long it took to open? was it easy to do? and any other comments on either bank please.

Thanks,
Cath
Hello.

After the announcement that Wespac made this morning, I wouldn't touch them. We use HSBC which is virtually fee free and we use ING as our savings account.

Do you know exactly whats happening ?

Westpac only recently started the Westpac One account at $5 per month with unlimited free transactions. Yet that article quotes "Customers also face increased eftpos charges"

The Westpac web site quotes "Unlimited fee-free transactions – you'll have the freedom to make as many withdrawals as you like through EFTPOS, Internet Banking, Telephone Banking and through Westpac ATMs and branches. Deposits are also fee-free."

As we have a Westpac account, aswell as HSBC, and St George, and a couple others (all fee free in case anyone thinks I pay a fortune in fees ), I was puzzled so checked it out.

It does seem to be a case of media trying to create panic.

The actual info is:
Westpac will increase fees on many common consumer bank transactions.

The new fees include a rise in the "foreign bank ATM" fee to $2.00 per withdrawal, up from $1.50.

Westpac will also increase the monthly account keeping fee on its Classic transaction account to $7.50 from $5, fees on dishonours and overdrawn accounts, to $50 a time from $40.

The Westpac "Classic" account mentioned, is no longer listed as a new account option, as far as I can tell. I will assume that anyone with that account would switch it to the $5 per month one, and avoid the increase.

To avoid the extra 50c on using someone elses banks ATM's, it is a case of just using the Westpac ATM's, as they have plenty of them. That $2 fee is the same charge as many other banks make, on "foreign" ATM's. (Including HSBC after our first 5 free ones each month)

I think that the newspaper has hyped up the story, although hopefully it will encourage Westpac account holders to check they have the correct account, and avoid any extra fees.
