OP - we have been here a few weeks and won't be returning to the UK any time soon. Some things are more expensive - rent (for somewhere that isn't a hovel),used cars, plastic storage containers and beer for example but other things are cheaper, like coconut oil, fish oils, fuel, Aussie wine, seasonal fruit and veg. My OH reckons Bunnings is cheaper and better than B&Q. We shop in Aldi then top up in Coles / Woolies and use the discount pharmacy and Big W for everything else. Overall, I don't think it is more expensive once you remove the cost of housing. And before anyone says anything, I know Lumpommer is stuck in Groundhog Day and is usually best ignored but I wanted to post this :D |

I'm starting to enjoy this thread. Actually, I typed "I'm starting to enjoy this therad" and then corrected the typo, but now I'm thinking about what a therad could be.
As you were. |

Open invitation: what are people paying for labour rates at independent garages in the UK?
Got another cheap for Melbourne: my travel costs are significantly cheaper than in London. ~10 dollars gets me a 100k round trip in rush hour. Trams/Trains. ~200 dollars (it would be even less if I actually got a monthly) is what a 'monthly' Travel card costs me. Most people will earn more in dollars than they ever did in sterling - in some cases x2, X3. Infact, taking into account salaries it's almost like 100GBP, even less, a month for a travel card. It was more expenisve than that in 1990 - I think! |

2nd hand cars need MoTs in the UK, but cars need a RWC in Melbourne on sale. Cars last longer here - you can pick up a reliable Mercedes Benz for 2-5k and run it in to the ground and pay Holden Commodore service rates. Most of the older MBs, the good ones, before the bean counters got hold of them, in the UK are starting to rust. |

Warm sea water, again you don't have to fly to another country. Apple computers. Lamb Although supermarkets, telephone/broadband and power are cheaper in the UK, I'm not saving any money from my (reduced) Aussie pension, and am dipping into savings. In Oz my savings also earned me 10 times as much interest as in the UK, thus I'm not convinced that swings and roundabouts are working in my favour. |

Agree about Bunnings/B&Q, especially for specialised stuff and tools. B&Q have a few headline bargains but are generally more expensive than independent plumbing/timber/bathroom/tile/electrical suppliers. I renovated 4 properties in the UK and rarely bought from B&Q - unless I needed something on a Sunday. Bunnings beat them hands down on tools. Screwfix is a great option in the UK - wish they were here

Re: Anyone quitting Aus due to the high cost of living
Unlimited Mobile Phone Plans.... Circa 35 dollars per month for the cheapest at present with 5 gigs of download.
TV Licenses.... Well lack of. Most Electrical Goods. |
Re: Anyone quitting Aus due to the high cost of living
Most electric goods, definitely not but it did used to be the case.
TV license, yes but I willingly pay it. Unlimited mobile plans, you could be right but I only use PAYG. |

The $35 plan is monthly - but there is a mention of a third plan which is PAYG - credit lasts up to a year. That's better than expiring credit if you are a low user :)

Yep - why is that expensive? I've charged my phone 3 times so far, and lose money every time it goes out of date. My UK phone was charged just after arriving, and still works if I wanted to use it to make calls. Think I have to use it once a year minimum to keep it active - not sure on top ups after that :)
IE: a 10 dollar plan in Aus, will generally cost 80 cents per minute. |

Quite simply Because of the rate per call cost. IE: maximum cost per minute is usually on the cheapest/start off plans.
IE: a 10 dollar plan in Aus, will generally cost 80 cents per minute. With Aus plans I might only pay 1c min. If I charge it with $20 to get that rate, and make 20 mins of calls - instead of having $19.80 left for the next month, the credit expires and I have to recharge (I actually think my credit lasts longer than 30 days but you get the idea - like I said, only works out if you are a low user :) ) |

www.freedom.com.au Super Amart? www.superamart.com.au I don't know if you'd call these particularly cheap but they're chain generic. Personally, I'm not a fan of amart furniture but did buy some freedom stuff years ago. If I was looking for cheap and good quality, I'd check out second hand ads in papers/online, second hand shops or even some op shops. |

I cant find either product on the websites for those prices so clearance perhaps? I can get an LG monitor for £110 which is very good as I do like their products. Australia is about 2 years ahead on TV pricing for whatever reason because most other appliances are equal or cheaper here. Its one of those anomalies in pricing. Curries isnt the first place I would go for great prices though.
