Hi all.
Interesting thread. I'm a web developer (PHP/MySQL/Linux/Apache), and we're intending to re-locate near to Brisbane (to be closest to jobs).
However, i'm all for a smaller place, and wonder if either of the posters on the Sunshine Coast would be able to reckon on my chances....at the moment i suppose very small, but will have a better nose around when we're there.
TIA.

I work in banking J2EE & .NET 2 and currently banks are poaching staff from each other so you get to play them off against each other to get better rates so as far as I am concerned it is fantastic. Rates not as good as UK but them I dont want to live in the UK so it doesn't matter.

Most agents don't care until u are there, and ready to interview the next day.

The smaller company comment is an interesting one. I've gone from an international company of 20,000 to one of 48, and I much prefer it. In Australia, a majority of companies are less than 50. I don't know the stats, but they are available because we target organisations that have more than about 250 employees.

Anyone able to comment on the Banking IT industry in Melbourne? Melbourne is my (& wifes) prefferd city of choice but it seems that Sydney has many more of the investment Banks & that would be a more sensible move for work. I work in Trade floor support in London atm & would be looking for a similar role in Aus. Also any idea of contract rates or Salary would be good.

Watching this thread with interest.
I have 10 years full lifecycle software engineering in pretty much any language you fancy, but mainly C/C++.
I did try and contact a few agencies and companies from here, but I think it gets deleted if you don't start with "I have a visa...."
Hoping that our month long visit in October will see some interviews, we are planning a week in Sydney, a week in Melbourne and 2 weeks in Adelaide ( I am doing a fews days work for my company and have a friend there).
What's the best way of doing this, I was gonna email the companies about a month or so before and send a cv offering a window for interviews or too meet up.

Hi guys, great thread!
My question is this (grateful for any help!!) I have been working as a PM/PCM and Business analyst in ICT & Telecoms for nearly five years, I have Prince 2 Pratitioner, and am planning on spending two months in Oz from September time onwards, looking for sponsorship (457 visa) and work in either of (or combination of these fields).
Does anyone know of anyone who recruits regularly in this line of work? I am looking at going to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and maybe Perth (but I don't think the IT job marketplace is as good there! It may just be for a visit :-) )
Any hints & tips gratefully received!!
Thanks

Problem is, some of them are very hard to understand. You can work with them but tend not to be able to have lengthy discussions or talk around the subject - one bloke new here - you have to email him, and even then his written responses are poor. I tried to arrange something into test by talking to him and it was impossible as he misunderstood each nuance. If I was interviewing, he wouldn't get the job, and I'e made this clear to the bloke that interviewed him. We've had a guy here for 2 years and alot of people refuse to deal with him. He's held me back as I've had to guess most things, and in some instances, it's been 12 months of trial and error.
One of the reasons I seem to get jobs even though I am not as clever as these people is that mgrs and team leaders like good old fashioned communication skills and this is one thing I can do.
I had to stand up and give an impromptu talk on a system today and afterwards I got emails from everyone saying how bang on, interesting and ''brilliant'' it was(!) - perhaps they've forgotten what's it like to have someone who can string a sentence together..

I hope this trend continues for ITIL as we are coming over to Melbourne early next year and my OH is a Red Badge holder as well as having Prince2, so hopefully he won't have too much trouble finding a job.

I have been looking at Seek.com for the last 6 months and have noticed that the same jobs are advertised repeatedly giving the impression that they are not able to fill the jobs. I was interviewed by a Big 5 it company in sept and shortlisted to have the second interview. I waited for 2 months for a response and finally decided that i didn't make it. The recruited contacted me after 3 months and said that the position was on hold and would contact me as soon as they land the contract!!
However the recruiter is posting the same post every other day on seek for the last four months.
