Anyone moved to OZ and work in IT?

If so just wondering about the job situation, especially in melbourne / brisbane areas. I look at the job sites and there seems loads of jobs which are paid well but i hear on this forum they are few and far between.

Also how does it compare working in IT in OZ to in the UK?

Any advice would be good

TIA,

Mat

Good thread, I'll be watching the replies with interest too. We're off to Melbourne in September, I will be leaving behind a ICT service desk manager job in a big organisation to go to....who knows?!

I'm working on my CV and will probably start applying for IT jobs in July...some posters have said they were interviewed over the phone and secured a job before they got to Oz, so it can be done.

One thing that seems to be taking off is the whole 'Service Management' culture, built around adopting ITIL best practice - LINKY. We went to Melbourne this time last year, and when we came back I checked out the Aussie job sites for keyword "ITIL" and got a single page of results. Did the same a few weeks ago and there were 20+...which made me happy as I've passed the certifications :D

Keep in touch here or send a PM if you want to compare notes on anything

Cheers

Marcus

I work in IT on the Sunshine Coast. My job is business support specialist and I basically look after all of our business customers. This is anything from supplying business workstations to installing servers and site to site connectivity.

The money isn't good up here but the conditions are good and the company is very laid back.

I'm also on my way, and interested in replies.

Check this job site out:

http://it.seek.com.au/

But to throw my penny in, I much prefer self employed/freelance route.
So, I would like to get networked up with as many open minded IT gurus as possible. Just incase no one gives us a job. I figure go out and get your own work. After all who wants to work for a sales man?

We are all self employed, It's just that some people don't realise it!

oh.........I thought you meant Sydney. Those jobs are advertised by recruitment-and wait till you see how they waste your time.

I moved out November 2005 to Sydney, the market here is fantastic, hardly a day goes by where you don't get calls from recruitment agents trying to poach you from your current employer. I would look for contract work though as under the new work choices regulations everyone is essentially a contractor anyway the permies just get a lower rate.

I can only respond from an IT Management perspective. Techie types may have a different view.

My understanding is that ITIL (Red Badge) and ISO 20000 knowledge and experience is very much in demand, increasingly so, in Aus.

IT Project/Programme Management coupled with Prince 2 accreditation is also sought after.

Many jobs also available for Change, Config and Knowledge Management specialists.

UK best-practice is widely accepted in Aus

**these are my personal views based on my experiences to-date**

I'd agree with this. I am working in IT in Sydney and the market is certainly hot here. Big demand for skills. From the posts I've read a lot of the people struggling to find IT work seem to be based outside of the major cities. I think if you are located in one of the major cities then finding IT work shouldn't be too difficult.

There seem to be jobs out there I think most IT skills travel well so it's not a big hurdle like some other professions.

The jobs go out to all the agencies so you might see the same job on seek a few times making it look like there is more out there then there is.

Plenty of work in Perth at the moment - I don't know about the permanent market but the contract market is very strong [especially development].

I really don't know how anyone can classify the market here as "fantastic"-if we are talking in relation to the UK it is much weaker-it ain't Papua New Guinea-but I don't see whats fantastic about it. It is infact one of the weakest IT markets in the western world. I am not saying you need be unemployed-I work from home as a contractor and am doing fine. It might heavily depend on your field-I do business layer back-end microsoft stuff and its a lot of fine tuning other peoples applications rather than creating applications from scratch as I was more used to in the UK.

It is possible. I was recruited from the UK last year by my present employer who sponsored my visa. I know of several other people who have got out here via this route.

In terms of coming out here without a visa I don't know how well you would get on. I haven't met anyone who has done it that way.

I work in banking J2EE & .NET 2 and currently banks are poaching staff from each other so you get to play them off against each other to get better rates so as far as I am concerned it is fantastic. Rates not as good as UK but them I dont want to live in the UK so it doesn't matter.
