Re: Anyone moved to OZ and work in IT?

Hi

I moved here in January and used seek.com.au to look for work before I arrived. There looks like there is loads of jobs until you have to start applying for them.

I applied for approximately 15 jobs I thought I was qualified and experienced for, but only one company would arrange an interview before I arrived, I arrived in Australia and got the job I had the interview for. I felt I was lucky as apart from my current job there was little out there that was permanent, paid ok and applicable for me. I was applying for level 2 support jobs though, so as mentioned previously I can only comment on what I was looking for personally.

The fact I could start immediately helped when I arrived though.

All I am really saying is that the market isnt as "textured" as the UK-it doesnt really matter that much to me either-as I care little for the UK work culture fullstop. I feel much more relaxed with the Aussie mentality to everything, many who come here don't click with the Aussie mentality-so if things like property or jobs don't measure up-whats the point.
In the UK I owned a massive and genuinely luxurious house on abig plot of land-here I live in a rabbit hole-ironic huh-people coming here don't realise that the seemingly bigger cheaper houses come with a catch-they are in the middle of nowhere-and there is massive difference between the middle of nowhere in Oz and the UK. Nowhere in the UK is really the middle of nowhere.
If you want to live in desirable areas the prices are astonishing.
here lies apther reason why some love oz and others dont-if you have fully paid a house in say Bradford worth 150 000pounds-you can in fact swap that for a place in say Coogee worth 1 million AU, and feel real fancy, with abig but doable mortgage-however if you live in a fancy place near London but have no equity or not much equity -you may find yourself a bit bitter.

I lined a few interviews before I got here, thats back in 2001 and the IT market seemed to go belly up just as I landed so nothing came of the interviews.
Managed to get a 1 month contract though and 6 years on I'm at the same place.

They seem to take people on as contractors here and then offer them a job if there any good, I guess it was really hard to get rif of people once they started, not sure if thats changed with the new IR laws.

In terms of coming out here without a visa I don't know how well you would get on. I haven't met anyone who has done it that way.

what i meant going to australia without a visa, is go there via visitor visa, and look for jobs there..and get sponsorship...

if we do get the job there, the sponsorship usually is which visa class?? izzit 457?

I wanted to go back to my engineering roots when I got here but the money was shite, back in IT Project Management now, the money is better but not as good as the UK. If your coming to Brisbane, Oracle, IBM and Mincom are some of the bigger names, places like Suncorp and many of the other large finance companies have big IT departments. There seems to be plenty of contact work around at the moment.

I quite often see internal vacancies come up so can start posting to this thread, so long as I get my introductory payout!

In interesting thread, my background is doing trading floor IT support. Moving to Sydney so hopefully this will not be too much of an issue.

We struggle to find decent candidates in Brisbane for development (AJAX or 4GL), testers are like gold dust. and we're just 'trying again' for an internal systems/MIS person.

I'm permanently recruiting for consultants due to growth and a bit of an inability to change leading to me to have a bit of a 'clear out', this is in Brisbane, Canberra and Melbourne.

We always recruit with 6 months probation and 2 interviews to make sure we don't end up with somebody with 2 heads and an unhealthy interest in shetland ponies.

One thing that is very different is the packages that are on offer here vs Europe, and I think that some of the more forward thinking companies are looking at this as the way to recruit and retain staff (about bloody time!).

Seems there are is a fair amount of work out there. I've a mate in Canberra who is a recruiter, and he says the same for that market, although with Gov employment I think you need to be PR if not a citizen. But there is a lot of contract work available in Oracle (aps and database), SAP, Java and some .NET.

Im a unix administrator (mostly HPUX but some Solaris too) im planning to get to Sydney later this year on 136 visa. My background is mostly telecomms stuff, but I also worked in an investment bank in London for 13 months.

I have spoken to a few recruitment companies at the expo in London, they all said I should have no trouble finding work.

Cheers for the replies guys,

I work with networks, security, servers, 3rd line support. I guess nearer the time i'll have to start enroling with agents and applying to see what there is out there, would be great to walk straight into a job when/if we ever get there.

Cheers,

Mat

What you need is an experienced oracle developer in Brissy.. Still deciding if after 15 years of investment banks to stick with it, or just become a postman

I think you will find that a majority of recruiters won't treat you seriously until you're either in country, or well on the way (flights booked, dates set and so on). They are inundated with applicants from China, India, SE Asia, who are looking for a visa and a job. (in fact I bet we get 1 a day, and we don't aggressively advertise, leaving that to the recruiter).

I was talking to a mate in Sydney on Monday, and he said that a mate of his has just been recruited by Fujitsu from overseas, but he is an SAP person.

I was recruited from overseas, but my company knew me as I used to work for the SW supplier.

I'm not aware of any Oracle development shops in Brisbane. Better make sure you're motorcycle license is up to date for Australia Post!

Hiya, I managed via the visitor-to-457 route in Sydney, as did a girl who works with me.

However, having said that, there was a poster on here not long ago (Blooregard Q Kazoo) who took the plunge and came over to Sydney on the visitors visa looking for a job and sponsorship and had to go home again.

If you find lots of jobs going with your skillset than you might be ok. I work in ASP.net and there's plenty of work here - but then again it is on the demand list!

I think you have hit that nail on the head, decent people are hard to find.
Loads of people out there who have just done an Excom (or other waste of time course) shouting becuase they can't get work.
