The last thing right now I ever want to do is something that would appeal to a backpacker or student in terms of drinking places.
So restaurants and bars, with some live music is good for me.

The two classic phrases used in the Sydney Vs Melbourne debate :
"Melbourne. If you don't like the weather, wait for 30 minutes"
"Sydney. It’s a nice place to visit, but I wouldn’t want to live there."
Both phrases complete stereotypes of course, but they always give me a giggle whenever I hear them

So Timmerman how did you find it?
Im in bris at the min, came here in may but finding it hard- not many young...ish, likeminded brits here and the aussies dont seem to friendly to outsiders.
Struggled finding work, there is a lot of construction work going on here but speaking to people work is drying up in QLD, so the jobs they do have go to australians, i think its more a case of "who you know and not what you know" when looking for a job.
im moving to melbourne on the 25th july, just got to find a temporary place to stay.
If anyone has any ideas on temporary accomodation for a min of 1month let me know.
thanks all

Temp accommodation, like everything else, will depend on your budget, but there's quite a few serviced apartments around - try googling Quest or Punt Hill for ideas on location and prices. Otherwise if you're on your own there's always a backpackers. I know a few families have booked cabins at holiday parks for a while too - probably better in summer than winter though.
We've just returned to Melbourne (March) so still settling in, but we found a rental fairly quickly.
Good luck with the move - if you want any Melbourne info or tips, feel free to ask.

. Oh well. So we're back (I'm actually a Kiwi, OH is the Brit). We're a bit older now, but moved over here the first time in our twenties with no kids and lived in St Kilda which was fab - lots of bars and restaurants, close to the beach great transport to the city. Most of the inner city suburbs have good transport links - try searching Fitzroy, Richmond, St Kilda, Prahran, Brunswick - depends on what you want - quiet, lots of nightlife, parks, older property or new apartment, beach, shopping, etc. It will depend on where you're going to be working too. You'll get lots of moans about the trains here, but on the whole they're pretty good - not up to London tube standards though
.

Restaurants, bars repeat......
(mind you am from Killie, so Glasgow is positively posh
