We live in Wahroonga, which as mentioned is very green and leafy, but close to Hornsby for shopping, cinema etc.
Have you thought about Berowa - it is a little further out, but we have friends who lived there for years and loved it. Said it had a very friendly family environment. It is a little further out from Hornby, but easy to get too. Don't know much about the schools I'm afraid.
