Sorry to those who think I'm having a whinge but after tonight I think I need to let off a little steam, as this PC was nearly fried by the on-off-on-off-on and low output of electricity, affecting houses and units in our street randomly. This was apparently caused by faulty traffic light (saw power crews up pole fixing it, Yeh right). Thought this was the 21st century in a first-world industrial nation, would have been better off in Beleize, as Pollyana
said as abuse was hurled after the joggers crashed into the fence outside. Thank God PC came back to life as it was going to be dumped on the counter of the nearest Energex office tomorrow.

I have been told that the UK system has not had a major outage since the seventies compared to the yearly outages from outdated equipment. And no I'm not Mike Stanton in disguise, but an Australian (Queenslander) who is fedup with the crap that is going on in this state and what is not shown in the glossy brochures shown to people in the UK or anyware. No wonder people get fedup and go home.

The only time this was worse was during the late seventies and early eighties when the striking power unions clashed with the then National Party gov't. At least then we new the reason was political not equipment failure.

We live in a village called Milford about 2 miles from Godalming, 7 miles from Guildford. We're always having power failures for hours at a time. Ever since we moved here 6 years ago!! Forever getting up late because the power is off.

Hi There,

We are (for the time being) in the UK and live in a small village in the Chiltern Hills where our electricity is still overhead which means that about 8+ times a year (not always during bad weather) the power fails. Recently, it was off for 23 hours (we did get £54 conpensation)! Basically, it depends where you live in the UK as to the failure rate of service.

Hubby is a Electrician and we're looking to move over to Qld. Worry has been that there wouldnt be any work for him there but sounds Oz needs more top quality Pommy Sparks over there to give the country a poke in the ditection of the 21st Century (typed tongue in cheek :p !!)

Perhaps the Oz beaurocrats/TRA should be more accepting of the hard earned qualifications and job experience of tradesmen/women from the UK, instead of making them jump through the SAME hoops/MORE hoops, for months on end, waiting for licences to work there!

We know now that if the lights flicker more than 3 times in the hour the power will go off. It's been very annoying as every time we have a black/brownout the ISDN modem shuts down and has to be rebooted, the reboot procedure only takes 4 mins though, while we were at work one day my dad had to reboot it 5 times just to make a phone call. If the phone worked it wouldn't be as much of a problem as the pc just gets switched off.
I've read the thread and things are different here from the U.K. In the U.K power is 240v give or take a few volts. The U.K national grid is the standard setter for the rest of the world. It stays the same unlike the method used here where the power can drop right off yet not go completely out. This can cause thousands of $ worth of damage to electrical appliances. Fridges and freezers are particularly sensitive to having the motors running to slowly.
I've bought a UPS now only a small one 300va 180w. Cost less than $100 from Dick Smiths [special offer] and comes with software/cable to speak to the pc. It's cured the problem of having to reboot the ISDN daily and in the event of a total outage gives us time to turn off the pc after saving the stuff your working on.

I'm a power engineer, here's a few thoughts:

UK distribution system is robust & has a lot of redundancy, sure a lot of the equipment is old (1930's-50's), but it's solid, it was built in a time when things were made properly.
A lot of rural/remote areas in the UK are fed by overhead distribution & therefore get problems in bad weather.
Most power around the world comes out of the power station to the distribution system on overhead lines, so if there is a problem with that, then it does not matter if you local cables are underground, the power is going to be off.
Overhead systems are reliable if they are designed & maintained properly, maybe this is not happening in Qld?. I know there is a problem with this in WA.
Power to your house generally comes via a ring system, so if a local substation goes down, then it can be quickly switched out & the power can be fed from the other direction (It's a bit more complicated than this, but trying to keep it simple). If your power is not back on within 2-3 hours at the most, then either the system is crap or someone is not doing their job properly.
Brownout's can be deadly to electronic equipment, especially computers. If this happens, switch off the power at the main isolator & wait for it to be restored before switching back on.

Ok so I think I get brown outs quite a bit.

Light bulbs go really dim and flicker, the tele almost switches off but then decides to stay on (thank god for that as I was watcing some realy interesting programme on pigs trotters or something :D :D  )

So my surge protector is basically no use at all for these (only power surges) and I need some other fan dangled thing, what is it called?? what sort of shop do I get one from (dick smith??)??? and how much am I gonna get taken for one of these??????

And if my house get struck by lightening every electrical item I own is buggered.

Good post by the way bloke, I really do think that people moving here should know the good and the bad, and to all of you who slag people off for saying something bad about OZ get a ****ing life and face facts Australia is not the be all and end all of life it is another western country with the same level of problems as every other western country (but you dont generally have to scrape the ice off your car before going to work :D :D )

A UPS will sort out the brownouts. A 500KVA one should suffice. Don't go plugging laser printers into it though. As Amazulu says a brownout can take out some of your electronics.
