Do you know The Bloke personally to be able to be this frank? Thought not! My Mother always says if you have nothing constructive to say, don't bother saying anything at all. Shame you have to sink down to this. M [/QUOTE=MERLOT] Your mother gives good advice!! Good thing The Bloke is asleep, but I'm sure he'll read the comment with delight in the morning.....I may stay in bed longer than usual......... M :) |

Quick question (or questions) really...... We live near London and have seen our fair share of things in the past regards late night yobbos throwing bottles, fighting in the street etc etc. We're moving to either Fairlight/Manly/Seaforth/Harbord/Balgowlah in about 2 months and wondered what the "yob culture" was like over there? Is Sydney as bad as some places around Bedfordshire? Luton? Some places of London? OR, does it depend where you are/when you're there etc? Is Australia less of a "Yob Culture" environment than UK? VIEWS PLEASE!!!!!!!! Ta [QUOTE] seems a strange thread to start in view of what you've just posted on here  |

But yeah, a cheap UPS (doesnt have to power the comp for long, only act as a buffer in the power supply chain) would provide much more protection for not that much more cash.. just make sure its one that is 'always in line' rather than one that switches in when the power drops too low/goes too high, these are not much better than your surge protector due to the switch in time. The always in line ones charge a battery system from the mains, then the inverter for your PC runs from the battery... hence anything that happens to the mains is buffered through the battery. Eek, long post! :) |

Disappointing attitude from them and I am sure they won't get much support from this site. M :( |

Hiya jas_uk,
you are quite right, a UPS would be better. You can get one's that connect via the serialport (suppose it's usb nowaday's) that shut the PC down when they are about to run out. :) A laptop might be an easier option though. Bye Mark |
Re: Another Reason For Going Back To The UK!!!
Where l live in OZ l usually have around three blackouts a year that don't last more then 2 hours. Often it happens when a car crashes into a pole that carries an above ground power line. Australia's probably alot better then many other 1st world countries, was'nt all of New York blacked out a year ago. Atleast you are'nt going to freeze to death as you would in a Canadian or northern UK winter. Getting solar power is a good idea if you can afford
the 15 grand, the OZ government pays part of the cost l think around 10-15% |

the 15 grand, the OZ government pays part of the cost l think around 10-15% I looked into it when I found on the forum the costs of putting mains onto a new site. The UK isn't the best place for off grid living via solar power, wheras Oz with lots of sunshine should be much better. Bye Mark |

I believe there is a campaign to give customers money back if the outages are unnaceptable [guidlines set out somewhere]. Having said that, the guidlines re what is/is not acceptable seem pretty tepid...but at least it's a start as I think the governemnt realise they have to start somewhere and it's the "softly, softly" approach for now to encourage Energex to get their act together. The government can hardly bring out the big stick as it seems they are also to blame for this mess, so "weak" punishment [initially] is probably more condusive to gaining improvements / results. So...people do complain, it's just that the wheels of power [pardon the pun]are not quite as fast as we'd like em to be  One business owner tried to claim compensation recently for lost food and income resulting from a blackout. His claim was rejected, so what hope have ordinary consumers got.:) |
