Hi we are thinking the same thing. Were supposed to be selling ours to our neighbour but they refitted their kitchen and didn't allow enough room. Doh!
So we will probably ship ours. New ones like that in Perth cost somewhere between $1200 and $2000 from what I have found. Ours is also 5 years old and we figured even if it lasts another 2 or 3 years it is probably worth it. We have to buy a new washing machine and bits and pieces which soon add up so if we can delay forking out $1k to $2k initially then it is a good thing.
As for fitting in, if you are going to a newer property with open plan you should be able to find room for it. Older properties may have a problem. We are just hoping for the best otherwise our fridge will end up in the living room - may not be a bad thing

That's the thing - if it isnt a model that you can buy here, as soon as it goes wrong then you have to toss it because no one will be able to service it or get parts for it.

Just looking on Ozzie sites eg Harvey Norman and have found French Door models which are the nearest I can find to the American side by side except the American have full lenght doors with ice and water on freezer side.
Yikes is that the price OMG $3,500 thats over £2,000 even the dearest highest spec over here is well under £1,000, will def be shipping ours.

A$2500 or 1,400 GBP. A waste of time shipping.

on The Good Guys website side by sides (with water/ice in door) start at around $1800. That is probably RRP and definitely before any discounts that shop give you.
We have one that we bought here to fit the first place we bought. It is currently sitting on our lounge without being able to use the ice/water as it won't fit in the hole in the kitchen in our rental. Had we not decided that we will be refurbishing the kitchen in any place we buy I probably would have sold it by now as most the places I have seen (and definitely all the rentals) have a smaller space for the fridge than a side by side needs.

What make is your fridge that you are thinking of bringing? As long as it's a make that is available here you wont have a problem fixing it. If it fits in your container you may as well bring it as it doesn't cost you any extra to get it here.

Having the water/ice dispenser is a great thing - the kids end up drinking more water than fizzy drinks

If you are already planning to send a container then ship everything that isn't nailed down. I mean, what's the worse that can happen?. It breaks and you have to buy a new one. If you don't bring it you would have to do that anyway.

Don't forget that if you do ship it you will need to have the power lead changed to 230/240 volt with an angled 2 or 3 pin plug fitted. Don't know what that'd cost or who'd do it.

Seriously? Like any other electrical appliance that you bring over here, you go to Bunnings, buy a plug for a dollar, and change the plug yourself in a minute. Please don't say that you get an electrician in for that.

Just change the plug!
We bought ours and we have had a couple of problems but that's been due to packing. Make sure the packers take the glass (if you have glass) shelves out and pack them properly. Ours left them in so as soon as they hit water to be washed 2 of them shattered into thousands of pieces.
We had one breakdown but it was repaired no problem.
