most plumbers i know... opt for a kia preggio , or triton dual; cabs

This is a very interesting thread and one that provoked much panicked research for me.

However, it seems the licence issue is mostly restricted to QLD, another reason for me not to consider that part of Oz :D

I'm a brickie by trade but don't enjoy it and really wouldn't want to have to rely solely on it for my living. I much prefer the jack of all approach I currently have.

I think shipping a van over would be crazy and I mean no disrespect to you, it would be extremely costly and would not be cost effective!

All us tradesmen coming from the UK are or have been in the same movie as regards disposing of very good and reliable vans and tools etc and added to never being able to recoup what they are worth, the cost to replace and the general cost to ship if keeping then the move abroad hits you further in the pocket when added to Visa's, TRA, medicals, flights, property rentals or purchases and not to mention getting licenced if heading to Queensland!

We have been omitting quite a lot of items that we initially thought about bringing both household and working equipment and that has been further reduced following our meeting with the shippers! Sentiment has to be cast to the side and only the very necessary should go with you with the rest being sold or given to a good home:curse:.

As they say 'A change is as good as a rest' although I can't bear the thought of turning up on site kitted out in brand new clobber and tools like a first year apprentice with everything shining:eek:! You know its a tradesman thing, caked in silicone, plaster, paint etc and tools that look as though they have done a shift or two!

The problem is that a new nailbag or pair of working boots are generally on their last legs by the time you have finally broken them in!

I think you can always tell someone who has been around and can do a bit by the condition of their tools and equipment and as you say 'new' tools always raises a bit of suspicion where I come from!

Hi Guy's

Thanks for the very useful info about the licenced tradesman v's the handyman and the 240/110v tools. It's good to know that i'm not the only one who is struggling with the discission to sell my transit (White van man rules ) decide what tools to take and what to sell for next to nothing  and buy shiny new and risk looking like a twat  when in Oz.

I am hopefully heading to WA halls head area on my OH's 175 visa and hopefully going to set up a small property maintenance company as this is what I do in bonnie scotland similar to SBOZ (now dont jump down my throat )
as I have looked this up on..

http://www.immi.gov.au/search/search...st&form=simple

and think that this is ok in WA as a joiner,Bricklayer,Fencer ect doesn't need to be licenced. Electrical & plumbing are a big no no though.

So from what I have read on the last nine pages  anyone who doesn't want to go through the licencing process, Queensland is not the place for you. Go somewhere else ;).

I found the below on the immi.gov site. I know its for Joiners but you can type in any trade sparky's, plumbers ect and it will tell you what licences you need in the relevant states.

Keep up the good work & see you all in 2009 sometime hopefully.

Tony.

There must be loads of us with Visas sitting waiting on selling our houses! Only glad that we validated our Visas almost exactly a year ago, time has flown by since then! We can only hope that the housing market gets a kickstart as we are in this strange place called LIMBO !

Know it well! Used to play football there many years ago in the Paisley & District Amateur League and I have an old aunt who lives in Erskine and who goes to a club in Inchinnan every saturday night!
