H Pommy,

That would be good if you could let us all know the outcome of using your 110volt tools on site. Where are you based on the Sunshine Coast and have you found getting work easy?

THeres a bit more to it than that! The licence holds you LEGALLY and FINANCIALLY responsible for the work you do. Consumer/contractor complains and your legally held responsible for the rectifications etc. Your also financially responsible for that work. You also need liability insurance etc to operate.

Far more than a bit of plastic, once youve got that licence your legally responsible for every bit of wood and nail you touch and believe me when something goes wrong they will be after you, even years down the track.

Work drying up here in cheshire so hope things still going well out there ready for when we get there!

Work has also been drying up here in Scotland on most of the building sites, however, the domestic / private market which I have been working in for the past 15 years is still going strong! I made a decision a long time ago, probably at the last recession early 90s not to do contract or site work as there is always problems getting paid etc and with none or very little problem getting paid by homeowners etc it was an easy choice and one which has proved successful over the years. As we all know you always get 'bumped' for your money when you leave one site for another and your standard of work 'mysteriously' becomes so sub-standard that you kiss goodbye to any retentions that you may be due!;)

As we await someone to buy our house I am consoled by the fact that I have plenty of work on my books and the prospect of more if I want it as 'the people who aren't moving are improving' and as such there is no need to panic. If we are to believe all we hear on the news and read in the papers then it is all doom and gloom at the minute but on a visit to our local 'Costco' yesterday it was 'Boomtime' as all the checkouts had massive queues at them and all with folk with trolleys full to the brim!

The housing market has definitely taken a knock but the consumer side of things seems to be ticking over and with Xmas fast approaching I am sure like all previous years tradesmen will still be in demand.

We also live in Buderim.

You need a license to do pretty much anything - didn't used to need one for what we do but now there is a new class.

To get certified we used conteq.com.au - ST Construction like someone else here did. Again cost around 2k but we needed Cert 3 carpentry modules and Cert 4 business

Blue card is just a health and safety card - can do it online at blackdog training.

For licensing the individual needs to be licensed and also the ltd company needs a business license - so you need to get two BSA licenses.

There is heaps of work for tradesmen on the coast

Hope to help
Vivienne

Hi All

Jumping in on this one if you don't mind as we hope to be out on the gold coast mid 2009.

Any info on licences would be great, how do you get the business assessment/level 4.

I am running my building company here at the moment but not doing any major work, through choice, due to the economic climate

Simon
