Well HSBC have just excelled themselves again, 18 days to transfer funds! Nobody knows anything when you contact them. They just pass the query on saying it's the receiving bank.

Considering that they're supposed to be a global bank, it does make you wonder.

I've had no problems with HSBC Australia.

I rate them.

We're with HSBC and First direct at the moment in the UK and intend to stay with them. Must say it's a bit worrying seeing lots of negative threads about them!! Seems to be mainly the transfering funds bit that causes most problems - are they ok once you are actually there and using them as a current/savings account????

We've been with them two years and no real problems. The Online Savings Account works very well, and has the random number gizmo so is pretty secure. The only issue is that when you speak to someone on the telephone they are invariably Chinese and it can sometimes be difficult to explain things.

I've been with First Direct (HSBC) for too many years to remember and never had a problem, so thought I'd open an account with HSBC while still in the UK as I want an account to transfer funds through Ozforex.

I've had nothing but hassle with the International branch and still the account isn't opened. Had to complete the application and get loads of ID evidence together and get all this certified by my local branch, as well as withdraw a $2000 bankers draft to send to the international branch. Did all this, and took over an hour in local branch to get someone to do it. Several weeks later I get a call from the International branch asking if I can go to my local branch to get my ID document certified by them and get them to witness my signature on the application. WTF, I've already done this!!

One of the reasons I went with HSBC is because as a current customer they can supposedly introduce me to the Australian branch as they already know who I am!! So when I explained that I had already supplied all documentation and it was certified by the local branch, I was told that they hadn't certified it properly. Asked about my bankers draft and was told it's OK, they have that on their desk but just need the documents. So now I've had $2000 withdrawn from my account (plus fees) but it's not been deposited and not earning any interest.

Upshot is I spent another hour at my local branch getting all the same documents certified and forwarded on by the branch; that was 9 days ago and I've still not heard a word from them.

I'm hoping HSBC are really good in Australia, because if their international branch in London is anything to go by, their customer service is appalling.

Very,Very Simple reason for the transfer problems.

if millions or even Billions of £/$ are being transferred to another account and the money has come out of its original account it is laying in another account gaining loads and loads of interest for the bank!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My bank used to take a deposit into my account oover the counter but it would take 3 days to clear into my account unless i requested that it goes in immediately! reason for this being that it goes to a holding account where it will gain interest from a BIGGER bank that your bank has accounts with! SIMPLE

So lets say your money is taken from your account and its not into your destination account immediately then you are entitled to ask them where the physical £/$ actually is and also advise them that YOU will be charging the bank interest for the period that it is IN THE SYSTEM or IN A HOLDING ACCOUNT. while you cant have acces to it.

REMEMBER. Once money has gone from your account it MUST go to somewhere!!!!!!!!!!!!! it cant float around in the air.

i.e Someone at your bank logs onto your account details and makes a transaction (withdrawel) from your account, they MUST have withdrawn it to SOMEWHERE!!!!!

JUST ASK WHERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Even if you have to speak to the actual person that dealt with the transaction.

I have to say I have been with HSBC for 15 years in the UK and never a single problem. I set up my Oz HSBC account from home and as soon as I got here my new account manager arranged for me to go in for a chat. She explained all the differences between a UK and Oz account, the charge system, taxation the lot. She suggested I set up a UK sterling account here so I could transfer my money over here but let it sit in the account until the currency exchange is favourable. She asked me to fill in the form and there it is, 24 hours later sitting in Brissy. I can't fault them.

The Worlds Local Bank? I could think of something else to call them, but a certain mod might get upset

We have been with HSBC for over 30 years and their services have definitely declined. HSBC local banking is not a problem or internet banking which are both very good. Telephone banking forget it, I can't understand a word they say (Indian).

It's international transfers they have a problem with. Whenever large amounts i.e. bonuses etc are transfered they seem to get lost for up to 3 weeks and not earning us any interest. The bit that really gets me annoyed is that both the sending & receiving banks charge if they are both HSBC for the service. If the receiving bank is different we do do not get charged a receiving fee.

Indian - Me too with the Abbey.
I am never talking to the Abbey in the UK I am talking to someone somewhere else in the world.
