Adelaide
Hi all we are having a re-think about Perth and are looking at Adelaide, property seems cheaper and more jobs. Having never been to Adelaide would be grateful for some advice on which areas to avoid.
We have a 16 year old daughter so do not want to be in the middle of nowhere, don't think she would ever forgive us.
And would prefer not to be too far away from a beach.
Thanks
Nicky

yes done it all off my own back to get a job but we have appointed a agent for visa and TRA HOPE THINGS WORK OUT FOR U AS WELL. but one thing i will say is dont get put off with people on here saying about less money than UK cause it aint true in our trade. Also dont worry about getting your licence cause you can work on the companys one. all the best

Re: Adelaide
Hi,
We too were originally moving to Perth but over the last two years we watched the house prices get out of our reach.
We had visited Perth twice and really liked the whole setup. The immigration flights were booked, the dog was booked into Byford quarantine etc, but we gradually watched the ratio of what we would potentially have coming in as salaries compared to going out on a average mortgage move against us to the point where we would not of had much left over each month to live on.
With only a couple of months to go before we moved out here we changed our plans and decided to move to Adelaide. Risky, as we had never seen the place before, didn't know anyone etc.
We arrived in Adelaide 4.5 weeks ago and, don't want to offend anyone here, our initial impression was what have we done. We spent the next couple of weeks trying to get our bearings, looking round endless housing estates etc. I know we've not been here long but the place is gradually growing on us. We still don't think it's as nice as Perth and we even considered upping sticks and moving over there but we decided you can't really form much of an opinion in such a short space of time.
Some good and bad points for us so far about Adelaide:
GOOD
1. Extremely friendly and helpful people (well the ones we've met anyway).
2. Nice beaches to walk the dog.
3. The Meet and Greet service is well worth signing up for.
4. Nice and green. Suppose it has rained a lot since we arrived.
5. House prices are still in reach, but rising.
BAD
1. The drive into the city. Too many traffic lights and trains that cross the main roads.
2. Lack of rental properties.
3. Overhead power lines everywhere. Just ugly.
4. Street lighting is poor at best.
We've managed to get a 6 month rental in Mount Barker which we move into when our furniture arrives which should help us feel more settled.
Hope this helps a bit. Any questions just ask.
John

Re: Adelaide
We've been in Adelaide for 4 months now and love it here, We live in the hills which has a fantastic community and it is a very quick drive into the city, not that I need to go into the city very often.
There's lots of nice coastal areas though for me if we had chosen to be nearer the beach (and had a 16 year old) I would be looking at the West of the city - Flinders Park and the areas around there. I have rellies who live in Flinders Park and wouldn't live anywhere else. You are minutes from the city one way and the beaches the other way.
Hope this helps a little.

There's also Brighton, which is supposed to have a very good high school and isn't too far away from Glenelg. Or there's Hove in the middle.
Everyone seems to like Glenelg, although I'm not all that keen on it But I'd imagine a 16 year old could be.
Nothing is really that far away. There's a really great public transport system here, so travelling around is pretty easy.

Re: Adelaide
Adelaide was my home for 31 years and I really miss it ...I'd go back there tomorrow if I could
Someone mentioned too many overhead power lines in Adelaide...I've never seen as many as there is in Perth
