Cheers for the replies folks.
We lived in Melbourne a few years ago so have a pretty good idea of what you can and can't get (the same as) in auz but just wanted to sanity check the items that we planned to bring with. The extension leads suggestion is a good one. Hangers.... |

The extension leads suggestion is a good one. Hangers.... If you like tea I would bring a load of your favourite brand; you might be able to get it here in one of the specialist British shops, depending on the brand, but whenever I have checked they have always been near to their sell by date. If you are a hi-fi fan I have heard you will likely find that good quality speakers are better value in the UK and there is easier access to a wide range. Some have said you can't get as good a range of power tools here so if you are a tradie or are fussy, you might want to bring over (Festool). Don't know whether the tradies here use 110v tools with those yellow transformers like the UK tradies do. I think you can get better deals on cheap inkjet printer cartridges in the UK so if you plan on printing alot of photos you might want to bring a big supply. That being said original cartridges here are less of a rip off than in the UK. Steam generator irons are alot more expensive here than in the UK (more than double). |

Re: 5 Things
well some comments from me.....
1.Australia is well known for inventing the hills hoist washing line (whirlygig thing!!!) 2. why? why come and live on the other side of the world and bring a load of stuff from UK...why bother coming..just stay there where you can get all of that "stuff" what's the point of having a stock pile...what ya gonna do when it's all gone.....just buy an aussie flag and a plant a gum tree in the garden and stay put... sit and watch neighbours and pretend you live here 3. i thought the point of living in another country is to live somewhere else.....different........ 4. lamenting things from the past doesn't really help... 5 things it's a new start in a new country a new culture a new life live your life in the present enjoy today and now where ever you are:thumbup: |
Re: 5 Things
Tell you what I will miss...Barr's Irn Bru in glass bottles. Only ever found a place in Coogee that sold it when I was over before.
|
Re: 5 Things
I;m with you Why. I can't take Glasgow Rangers with me anyway.

Re: 5 Things

Re: 5 Things
oh no!!!!!
if you are a midwife and coming to Australia you may face a grime time from a job point of view (do you know what it is like to be a UK trained midwife and working in Australia?) well I do as I am one i don't want to upset you but don't paint an imaginary picture of Australia.....it just sets you up for "home sickness" coming here is an adventure don't make it: "it's not the same as UK" "I can't get this here" "we don't do it like that in the UK" I hope you aren't a direct entry midwife with out RN.... you might get run out of town as a witch over here...... it's not all bad news they do have "real" midwives here and the numbers are growing...but Australia is dominated by the "male medical model" in a private system and now has one of the highest LSCS rates in the Western world... Oh and don't mention the biggest swear word HOME BIRTH you will definitely get run out of town!!!!! so I guess from the above out burst the things I miss are a child protection system home births a fair and equal health system professional redevelopment community midwifery to me they are the treasures of the UK |
Re: 5 Things
I am a direct entry midwife but have been unable to get work in the uk so am coming over with no preconceived ideas just happy to have a job :D I'm starting on a graduate midwifery programme on arrival and from what i can gather should get more support than i would in the nhs but that remains to be seen obviously.
I'm sorry you feel unhappy with the 'australian way' but as someone who has recent nhs experience (albeit as a student) it couldnt be much worse! |
Re: 5 Things
that sounds good....i have a bit of a tainted view...sorry.....having not worked in the NHS for ten years i really don't know what it is like.... when i qualified as a midwife there in 1995 it was guaranteed that you had a job....mid isn't all that bad here...there are quite a lot of choices of places to work in Perth.. i did a few shifts in the king edward and joondulup hospitals while traveling around Australia...one of the best places i worked was in Carnavon as a midwife...i got treated really well ( in rural and remote areas you get a cheap house to rent with the job and everyone loves you as you are willing to go and work there)
midwifery is changing rapidly here and starting to become more of a entity on it's own...you will be well regarded as an English trained midwife...they do do some "funny" things though...you will come here and be a pioneer... quite a few of the english midwives i know are advancing quickly in their careers so you will do well i am sure.....:thumbup:good luck to you and send me an email if you want to talk more "midwife stuff" I work in child health now in the community |

1. A wind breaker for the beach ( got a friend to bring one out for me as they are only 10 quid) great for when the Southerlys get up in the arvo.
2. Winter clothes, boots, scarfs etc. Had to buy them again when we arrived and met winter that year. 3. Husband brought all his power tools (he is a chippy) wish he had brought a few more. |

129 bucks at Aldi this very week, its a beauty as well 30 litres, stainless steel.. Theye got dozens of them at Northcote and Preston Aldi here in Melbourne. I'd ring around in Tassie If i were you. I bought one to replace my old LG Convection Microwave, which didnt have a grill component and donated that one to our staff work tea room. BTW its 2000 Watt Convection 1200 Watt Grill and 900 watt Microwave, so the specs are fantastic. |
Re: 5 Things
Wow! that list got some people going!!!
Now, I think if you were going to China or Cambodia such a list would be necessary (coffee fo example costs a fortune in China!). On a serious note you must remember the cost of transporting any of the items over such a long distance (its not cheap) it might be cheaper to buy it when you arrive and (perhaps someone can shed some light on this) there may be some sort of customs duty going into Australia???? |
Re: 5 Things
What a brilliant thread. Its really interesting.

Buzzy I've said it before and I'll say it again,.... I'm bringing EVERYTHING with us! Not because I think that I won't be able to get it again when I get there, but because the cost of shipping is far less than the cost of selling it all, bringing the money over and attempting to purchase everything again, whilst getting to grips with living in a new country, it's not just the money, it's the time, stress and effort of replacing all your worldly goods and then there's the things you just can't replace, kids 'creations', photos, gifts, items the evoke happy memories, I want them around me..... It's all coming with me, for those reasons, I guess they'll always be stuff I can't take but at least I know that the main stuff will be arriving with me! |
Re: 5 Things
Just found out we can't bring our Dyson, damn!!! Its only a year old and its great, cost a bit too.
Ah well we will have to buy one there and give the one here to my sister cause I know she loves vacuuming!!! |

personally i think that is a load of twoddle. i am sure others have got their hoovers through with no probs. |
Re: 5 Things
You can take your hoover but just have to give it a really good clean first and change the filters
Thats what our shipper told us when they came to give us a quote last week! |

Re: 5 Things
Some posters fail to appreciate that some of us dont want to start over again. The things I wish I had bought with me were:
Dyson Tumble Drier Good quality cheap kids T Shirts from Tesco/Primark/Asda (My kids are toddlers so bothered about supre etc) Always Ultra (You can not get an equivalent here and believe me I have tried most of the brands) M & S Sofa Bed But that said, Hubby's work paid for limited shipping costs. Perhaps I'd feel differently if we were the ones forking out for the cost...... |

Yeah and Dyson's are very clean anyway. No filters, just empty out the cartridge and it's like new.
We might bring them and see what happens. BTW I asked this on another thread probably should have been here, the other one was about picture frames: Anyone know if we can take these? |

Re: 5 Things
They hate Ebay tat here. Just sell it on mate. And recover it in Bali. The Hutsul weapon is just tourist crap or "tat" as you rightly call it so might stick that on ebay. Wicker "laundry" basket is just a well its a wicker "laundry" basket!!! Don't really care too much about that either. |

Thats what our shipper told us when they came to give us a quote last week! I decided life was too short for such shenanigans, and will buy a new one when we get out there. ::fully paid up member of the disposable society:: :) |
