4x4's
#1
We are looking to get a 4x4 when we arrive, mainly for day to day use on normal roads with the occasional trip out to the outback (for those fun weekends).
I've been looking at prices of Toyota Landcruisers and Jeep Grand Cherokee. My question is simple, is it worth paying almost $AUD20k extra for the Toyota and if so why ?

primarily because the toyota LC is THE choice of all outbackers the whole world over
and it is almost indestructable for town use (though quite large)
cheers

depends on whether you want the family suburban type keeping up with joneses 4x4 or the "workhorse" type 4x4..
Toyota Landcruiser comes in both variants...the 4.2 diesel "workhorse" variant is fantastic and is universally loved all over Australia
cheers

We bought the smaller Toyota Prado - 96model, 100,000kms and put another 32,000 on it so far with no probs - the second fuel tank is a godsend when you do the nullarbor :-) It's a bit more managable around town but copes well off road. But then there's only two of us to cart around. If you're got kids, go for a cruiser, if you can afford the gas of course.....
And dont be put of by age. Cars dont fall apart out here - unless they're a 4wd that have seen beach action but an inspection will reveal that.
If you're only going bush a few time per year, why not save the cash and look at hiring a fully loaded cruiser from Hertz etc.? Their setups could easily set you back 70 grand and are really impressive.

The only thing I am a bit unsure about at the moment is what the final on road cost will be...ie GST at ??% , delivery, reggo etc. If anyone knows please tell me.
Anyway in anwser to your question the Landcruiser is definately worth the extra over the Jeep. The sheer size of the Landcruiser makes it king of the road, and although they have a similar bhp I would go for the V8 over the TD.

Chippy, if you take the price including GST and add 10% for all the reggo stuff, you won't be a million miles out in what you have to hand over to drive away.

The Jeep doesnt have the necessary clearence to do proper off road driving.
The Prado is a slighly cheaper option than the cruiser, and later models are a little bigger, depends how far you are going and how many of you.
We have just bought a Rav4 which is a diddy 4x4 to use in city and to do gentle track stuff but plan to upgrade later.
Dont forget that if you are planning proper off road activity you will also need to spend out for communication equipment of choice, its a jungle out there!! Lol

GST is 10% but check whether this is already included in the price. Usually, the price you see includes GST but not reggo etc. So take the price including GST and add 10%...
