We are worried about losing things in a shared container.

Can you get smaller containers? Even smaller than a reefer?

Hi Jacqueline,

They dont go smaller than 20ft i'm afraid, if you're worried about a groupage container then have you considered an LCL shipment?

This is less-than-container-load, and basically means all your items are placed in a wooden crate and loaded into a container with other crates for people going to the same destination.

It's faster than a groupage shipment and all your stuff is kept together and separate from others by the fact its in a crate.

Hope that helps,

Kirsty

PSS head office on 020 8686 7733. a really nice Aussie chap called Roy just came this morning to quote. said a reefer would be around £3k for my 1 bed flat (I have items to fill around 2/3 of a sole container). :)

Hi

www.crownrelo.com

We're using them. So far they've been very efficient and "user friendly". Packing us up on Wednesday so fingers crossed!

I got £3202 for 20ft reefer-1 bed flat from PSS plus 4 x crates for fragile furniture at £270 extra.

Just instructed them yesterday & sent deposit cheque but alas there is a mix up already. I told the lovely man who came to quote I was completing on my sale on 31st August. He msut have scribbled this down & the office thought I mean I wanted to move that day & booked it in then when in fact I put on form 29/30 August. 31st August completion means we need to be out by midday and they are now saying they cant fit us in any earlier:(

Now Ive pissed all the others off by telling them no and it looks like I may have to go grovelling back to one of them!

Re: 20ft container quote

Just read the bit about reefer containers attracting a premium making them more expensive than a 20 ft container which was posted by a person saying they were in shipping. Perhaps they are but they certainly are not in the business of shipping personal effects. I have really gone into this and this is the way it goes. Reefer containers (refrigerated containers) are used to bring food stuff that need cold storage to UK and Europe. Once they arrive they are emptied, cleaned out and the refrigeration unit is disabled and they are then sent back to the Southern hemisphere with personal effects in them where they are once again loaded up with food and the refrigeration unit is turned on again and it goes on and on in a circle. In effect the shipping company is getting their containers returned to the Southern Hemisphere by offering them to the removal companies at a lesser rate than the 20ft container. You have to remember that they take less freight because of the insulated walls so you cannot fit as much in them as you can fit into a 20ft container.

we're using Excess International, groupage (share a container) 375 cubic feet £1600. we've got equivalent of 1 bed flat to ship. Their tel no is 0208 324 2057 our contact was Derek Witham, he came out to the house & gave us proper estimate and lots of 'what if's' - mention sally from romsey if you call him please, he bought our tent from us!!

Hope this helps....good luck
