*** Is Oz More Of A Yob Culture Than Uk?? ***
Quick question (or questions) really......
We live near London and have seen our fair share of things in the past regards late night yobbos throwing bottles, fighting in the street etc etc.
We're moving to either Fairlight/Manly/Seaforth/Harbord/Balgowlah in about 2 months and wondered what the "yob culture" was like over there?
Is Sydney as bad as some places around Bedfordshire? Luton? Some places of London? OR, does it depend where you are/when you're there etc?
Is Australia less of a "Yob Culture" environment than UK?
VIEWS PLEASE!!!!!!!!

Hi,
I expect it has its bad spots, and some occassions you could be in the wrong place at the wrong time. I expect it to be like good old England..just avoid the tough areas.

Firstly, there is just as much of a 'yob culture' in Oz as UK. As Amazulu commented, it depends where you live. Yob culture? If you live in/near a place that is a magnet for youngsters, there will be plenty of drinking to excess. Oz, just like UK seems to regard alcohol abuse as socially acceptable
Certainly, Fairlight/Balgowlah/Manly/Harbord are generally far better than Luton or Bedford. But then again, these Oz equivalents are more 'up market'. Having said that both Manly and Harbord have hotels that can get rowdy, especially at w/ends.
If you want yob cultures, they are readily available in both countries.

Don't even THINK of Manly (NSW)!
Our lives have been hell since we arrived and rented near the centre. The antisocial yobbery is worse than anything I've seen in any other country and as Mike says getting absolutely plastered is seen as perfectly normal and just a prelude to smashing things up and making an unholy racket.
If you want any confirmation just talk to any shopkeeper - most would move tomorrow if they could despite the income.
Having said that, there are parts of Manly which are still quiet.
The premier of QLD was on TV yesterday confirming that alcohol bingeing has to be tackled - but just how given the Oz "culture" I don't know.

It's not all bad, I would say a few or some beaches get these problems, and then not all the time. Backpackers can add to the problems, but as BP says they are sometimes unfairly blamed.
Rog does seem to have had a rough time of it but them he is right in the middle of it.
We had similar issues living in a sleepy Suffolk town centre, right opposite the kebab shop on the main route from the pubs to the residential streets. It's not a bad place unless you happen to live in the wrong street.

I live right in the centre of town and yes on a Friday and Saturday night it can get a bit loud but in the 2 months i have been here i have not seen one fight or heard one bottle being lobbed, I even (when i cant sleep) go for walks round the city at 3 or 4 am and i feel totaly safe here!

Cheers all - most interesting.
So, we're saying avoid living in Manly Centre, but some other places around it are nice? Having said that, it doesn't matter where you go, you'll still find a yob culture if you're in the right place at the right time (eg 2am)?!
What about Balgowlah, Fairlight, Seaforth or Harbord.
Any ideas if these are ok?
Cheers

- Balgowlah Heights (family-oriented, quiet)
- Seaforth (family-oriented, quiet)
- Fairlight (quiet, and 15 minutes walking distance to Manly ferry)
- Manly (but try to avoid areas around the Corso - which are also expensive)
- Balgowlah (OK - but try to avoid the area around Sydney Road/Condamine Street)
- Harbord (OK, lots of units/flats - mainly for young couples
- North Balgowlah (family-oriented, but quiet)
