** Areas To Avoid In Brisbane And Sydney **
Hello!
Oz bound in a few weeks and will be hunting for accommodation.
What are the areas to avoid in Brisbane and Sydney? (In terms of dodgy places, violence, dingy pubs etc etc).
Ta!

Having just arrived in brisbane I wondered the same before I got here - but when you get here its pretty easy to spot.... The whole of brisbane is actually very close together then you get out into the burbs - Inala I think always gets a bad name as does ipswich. But I bet bottom dollar there are streets in neighbourhoods that you dont wanna be near.
Brisbane inner is mostly the same from what I can see- lots of mixture of redeveloped or not redeveloped queenslanders, juxtaposed with brand new modern 'steel & wood' flats/appartments. Get to an area - stop - get out - walk around get a coffee ( coffee is everywhere!) and you'll see whats going on locally.
You'll soon get a feel for places after a couple of days in a hire car - believe me!. Driving into places like Raby Bay its just stunning , places like South Bank are gorgeous but go there again at 7pm and its a different , slightlly more scary, story. Manly , Manyl West, they're really nice too - coastal.

I haven't been there myself but I would avoid Macquarie Fields - they've had a lot of bad press recently (riots with police). I think it's in the Campbelltown area. There's loads of good areas - so don't start there - is my tip.

As far as sydney goes I'd avoid the sth western suburbs especially cabramatta and lakemba. Eastern or northern suburbs be best I think
