It looks like the 457 visa will not prevent you getting the payment for those earning under $100,000. However, as a 457 visa holder you are not eligible for Family Tax Benefit (if I remember correctly) so will not be eligble for the "back to school" bonus.

Re: $42 billion Stimulus Package

So a family with 2 kids and one income of $150,000 get nothing and pay $43,250 annually in tax.

A family of 2 income earners on $75,000 each with 2 kids will get $950 each person and $950 each kid; or a total payout of $3800. That family's combined tax bill is $32,200.

The first family are therefore $15,000 worse off than the second.

I think I may have to send the wife out to work, halve my hours and put the kids into childcare; that will be good for the family.

If thats true it will be a bit of a bummer....

I earn just a fraction over $100k, but OH does not work as she looks after 2 kids (and growing #3 :) ) so looks like we will miss it...

So if in the 07-08 year you had tax offsets which brought you under the $100K limit you would still be entitled to something ? (depending on where you ended up in the bandings)

Yes. And?

There seems to be some misunderstanding here. This isn't about fairness. The government is giving out money in order to bribe voters to re-elect them. Poor people are more likely to be grateful for money than rich people. No matter how much tax you've paid into the Australian coffers you still have the same number of votes as those who have paid nothing. In effect the government is not interested in your vote, as long as they have the majority in their grubby little paws, no other vote counts.

Kevin 747 always reminded us of the iconic (In the US) Pillsbury Doughboy

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pillsbury_Doughboy
As time goes on I realise he doesn't seem to have the nous of the real doughboy.

Basic infrastructure spending is not, apparently, to be made. Forget about the long term needs - dams, roads, railways, sewers etc. Just pump (our) money into the economy and hope it works. Surely recent history shows it doesn't?

Just a few months ago he and Wayne were insisting that China would ride high and therefore *we* would too. What unbelievable ignorance.
