I am taking SA as it is now
I think that is the view of most people who post here. The point of contention, I believe, is what constitutes an accurate appraisal of "SA as it is now".

...but are you telling me that all of SA is only negative.
I like sunshine.

I guess it also depends on your political convictions etc
Possibly. I guess it also depends on one's level of education, experience, maturity, self-delusion, and many other hypothetical factors. That is why I have said many times on this list that people must make their own choices and be prepared to accept the consequences.

Good grief, thanks Pam for the reminder... who would want to live like that again. Constantly looking over your shoulder, constantly scared ... Not me, not as a parent. I value our lives, freedom, our safety and our children's innocence. Resident SAfricans are so desensitised - it's not normal!!

There are other places in the world where the sun shines and you can walk the streets or play on a deserted beach and do not have to worry about being gunned down in front of your kids or your little daughters raped.

Plus, yeah, actually South African winters are *$%£*$% freezing, used to wear like 5 sweaters to bed, never heard of central heating in my day! My poor dog's bowl of water used to freeze overnight.

Ten years ago I went through the tribal areas on the Afghan/Pakistan border. Nowadays it's where Bin Laden's supposed to be hiding out, but I was there in a group of holidaymakers. Lots of dirt roads, friendly people. Many people openly carried AK47s, genuine or working reproductions. We were never shot at, but the kids in the villages had a habit of chucking rocks at our vehicle when we drove through, causing the occasional small injury. Interesting place, but no way would I have tried to live there.

So a couple of years ago, after many years in Cape Town, an acquaintence of mine is gunned down by an AK47-toting gang raiding the Lakeside Kwikspar. At the same time a spate of rock-throwing on the city highways leaves another friend with a badly-damaged car, a narrow escape.

So, from my personal experience of both places, I could compare them and find equivalences. I found myself wondering why I would live in one when there's no way I would live in the other. That's why I'm back in the UK.

Let's do a real comparison, I'll do two weeks in Cape Town, if you do two weeks in Baghdad.

No, you'd have to do two weeks in Gauteng. The real test would be to invite Iraqi immigrants/refugees to settle in SA. Would they jump at the chance? Are they in fact arriving en masse already?

Although I will agree that Secunda and Nelspruit may only be dangerous if you come across elephants in comparison to Gauteng and lately Natal.
Nelspruit happens to be on the route that a lot of illegal Mocambican refugees
take to Egoli, I'm thinking particularly of my Cousin at Marloth Park this last year and the uncomfortable night they spent tied up.But, Hey,she did'nt get raped,he did'nt get shot, whats to complain about.
I also assume that as an about to be ex military man, you, as I did, figure old age, cunning and in my case 13 years of fairly active duty is going to beat some little snot hands down.
Jose! he was soo cool, he stayed well out of reach and he kept his firing lines clear at all times, when they started dragging my wife towards the bushes (some anniversary dinner!!) three of them kept me in a triangle.Fortunately, they realised that time was few and stopped.
so Bud, go and try and recapture your lost youth ,it's a figment of your imagination. but dont try and tell me to NOT respond to press reports when I still have family in there who CANT get out.
Deal?
PS:Great Weather does'nt help if you cant go out much in it.

Bravo,

To the point and with diplomacy

10 /10

Have a great weekend

I left SA because I didn't want to get a gun

Not sure where you are heading to in SA but the gangsters are all over, nt just in KP.

What you think about your kids ? You happy to take them back to SA and live a 9mm lifestyle

Give me cold and rain but safe any day ( without the 9mm) ;)

Get some good weatherproof gear, cheaper and doesn't kill anyone

We could start a uk negative thread based only on what goes on in parts of London, Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds etc......but that wouldnt be accurate would it ?

I am suprised that some South Africans are so negative.

But it got you there ;)

Friend of mines just been back on a contract ,said he got back into the 360 degree and remembering what headlight configuration was in your rear view mirror quickly, like riding a bicycle is a skill you never forget.

Robot green, left lots of space, car in front suddenly slams on brakes, doors fly open and 3 guys bail out!!
He said his bowels turned to water, thought they've got me at last, and he bails out the car with his hands in the air.
the three guys are running for a taxi they were about to miss,he's standing with his hands in the air and people start hooting to tell him to get on with it.
