I'm as scared of the UK as you guys are scared of South Africa! South Africa aren't that bad, you only see and hear the bad things! If you are planning to go to Cape Town, why not live in one of the smaller towns around Cape Town and then just work in Cape Town? There are really pretty towns with virtually no crime around Cape Town!
I am originally from the UK & married a SA lass. We are in New Zealand now & love it. It is not as expensive as UK and is far more laid back. Awesome place to raise children.

The summers here reminds me of the Cape and it is VERY safe here . It took my wife YEARS to leave SA but now she looks back after two years and agrees we did the right thing. We have a wee boy of nearly four a he is our life so we did this for his future too. A white male we believe has a limited future in SA.

I do realise it can be very nerve racking moving to a strange country & I was not keen to go back to the UK after 20 odd years in SA but would have if the other options didn’t pan-out.

If I may ask, what does your husband do? Lots of opportunities her in NZ, both my wife & I have our own businesses. You are welcome to PM me if you would like more info.

The other thing – there are loads of South SAfrians here in NZ and NZ ~has just recognise Afrikaans as one of the official languages here, interesting hey when the ANC is trying to wipe it out !

Cheers and the best of luck.

Whilst these may seem a solution and tempting I admit I would imagine that you don’t have children?

I must confess though, very sad that such a stunning place as Hout Bay had to be chosen for site for a squatter camp and as I remember it there were thousands.
Is it still the same? I hope that doesn’t de-value your property.

I am also intrigued why you say “impossible” in the UK? Is that because of your maid or could you be specific on that.

Also, for the benefit of others on the forum can you define “petty crime”?

Anyway, cheers & good luck. Let’s hope SA stays intact and you don’t have to loose everything and bail out on your parachute with nothing. Take care……..
petty crime??? I don't think so...

UK: 765 murders for 2005/2006, including the 52 people that died on 7 July in the London bombings (http://www.crimestatistics.org.uk/output/Page40.asp)

South Africa: Murders: 18 793 for 2004/2005 (2006 not available yet)http://www.iss.co.za/CJM/stats0905/murder.pdf

My husband is an electrician, but we are still battling to find out if his South African qualifications will be valid over in the uk...

Hi, so your hubby did his sparky in SA?

I am not too sure on thewhole process but I do know there is an exam that electricians coming from SA to here have to sit. I believe it is not hectic but more of a precaution I guess as SA has got a world renowned reputation for being able to buy passports, driving licences and qualifications.

I personally know a lady that runs a very professional personnel agency here and you could run it buy her if you wanted to check it out.

This probably sounds like I am trying to sell you NZ, I guess I am as this is an AWESOME place to bring up kids and is big on family values.

Anyways, good luck…………….

Yes hubby did everything in SA...

It's fine, don't think he will go the NZ as his family are all in the uk... But I do have friends that are planning on immigrating to NZ...

He is planning to do the exams again in the uk, cause at this stage it looks like the only option...

Hi, well yes I have just joined this forum. Apologies for not introducing myself. I will try and contribute where I can. You are actually incorrect, I do have children and they are aged 7 and 8. Two little girls. :-) They are both attending the Hout Bay international school.

Unfortunately the squatter camp is still very much real and alive in Hout Bay, that aside it has actually done nothing to property value. In fact the value of my property has more than doubled in value in the last 6 years. The recent elections in Hout Bay with the DA winning an absolute majority should indicate how "Big" it really is. The DA won over 60% of the votes.

Petty crime, well let me define that. Stolen hubcaps.... a car that has been broken into...radio/and a jacket stolen from car ....

Like I said, Cape Town is really a great place, We love being back. And should the sh1t ever hit the fan, well we have our passports in our back pockets and a home to return to in the UK...

Thanks for the reply.

Thanks for the reply and an interesting one too.

I am interested to know if you live, work and socialise in Hout Bay or do you ever go into the city? Would be interesting for other people reading this forum (that perhaps has never been to SA) on your lifestyle back in SA.

Cheers………..

Hi again Campbells. I wish i worked in Hout Bay, but my work takes me over the mountain every day all the way into town. I drive Victoria road, past Llandudno/Camps Bay into town. ANybody that is familiar with this drive will know its one of the most beautiful drives in the world! Working in town has its advantages for me as I get to drive this beautiful road every day, i also get a heads up with regards to the swell, I surfski most days after work. Socializing, well Hout Bay is pretty small so its kinda fun getting out etc but eventually the locals become a bit too much if you know what I mean. Everybody knows everybody! Believe me its hard to even fart in this town without somebody finding out about it. Its kinda nice in a way to go out and just know everybody but it does become a bit of a bore. In fact we went out for dinner the other night in Hout Bay, only to end up at a table right next to my daughters school teacher and her boyfriend. We often rather venture over the mountain into constantia and town. Most of our friends live in other parts of Cape Town so its nice leaving the bay every now and again.

I quote......... Makula Baas Mampara............

One of the reasons for the increase in the number of hijackings is that people are buying more cars, and so the hijackers have more to chose from, according to Makula Baas Mampara (Charles).

"A boost to the economy resulted in people buying more vehicles thus increasing the availablity of such vehicles to offenders" Makula Baas Mapara said in a written reply to a parliamentary question.

Minister Mapara, I vote for you for the next president so you can fix all the problems os SA with your absolute genius.

You are the Makula Baas Mampara of note.

What I would love to know is how much is this promoted garden boy getting paid ?

You gotta laugh

Hey dude,

Do I detect some anger there? I mean, wow two posts ago you were this laid back surfer boy with no stress except a couple of stolen hubcaps and jackets. YO, talk about sensitive! Gee and here was me saying you sound happy.

For your info mate, I have increased my net worth since leaving Mapara land.

Tell me dude, is that the best you can do, you know the mud thing? I mean didn’t you read my signature, you know Scots, LOTS of mud PLUS snow.

Okay you got me, we have mud. BUT we are deemed a first world mate & that means squatter camp free. Ouch, right on that raw nerve again……………

Come on mate, get real nasty with me, call me more names, and show how your aggression levels in SA have you being the shinning ambassador in every way.

NEWSFLASH:
I can come back to SA whenever I want, can you get out of there whenever you want?

Take a chill pill mate and if you are really angry don’t waste it on me. Hook up with your buddies over there and get something done about the sad & sorry state of things there. I’m out of there you still have to live with the smell of the squatter camp every time the wind blows.

Give me mud anytime bro I am no snob, I got a pair of wellies.

Ciao.

My biggest problem, other than missing my family of course, is will i feel 'trapped', not being able to come and go as i please in England, will i be safe at home all day whilst hubby earns a crust. i do understand that i will have to be extra vigilant but some of the things you read scare you to death, though ive never encountered any problems whenever
ive visited.
Also the only people i know out there is hubbys family, and as i have grown children will not meet people by taking kids to school.
I know only i can make the decision about moving, but just hope we are doing the right thing.
Hopefully we will move there and know we have made the right move and i will get to meet
people through similar sites like this.

Be warned….

This material is for mature audiences only and is definitely not for the sensitive viewer.

The camera does not lie !

This is how the ANC operated – as terrorists, they now rule the country.

Is it any wonder that their take on crime is that is you don’t like it jest leave.

THESE ARE BARBARIANS …………. This IS African culture

My advice is to you is if you want to go to the lions park, don’t get out the car.

It’s amazing that the rest of the world stood back & let this terrorism happen and still is whilst America and Britain make sure they make a big noise about it.

Anyway, watch it yourself and think for yourself that is my advice to you.
