Default Tax agent board

Hello,

Just wondering if anyone has had any experience of applying to the tax agent board, with English qualifications? I have done the University of Southern Queenslands tax paper also...

Thanks for any advice
Hafan

In which state? It may also depend on what your precise qualifications are.

I'm in WA - I'm a FCCA, FPNA, I have taken the Uni of Southern Queensland Tax / Law paper. I also have a Post graduate diploma in accounting from the UK and I have also sent them the letter from the ICAA stating that my qualifications are at least equivalent to an Oz degree... They are saying (unoffically as it has not been actually put to the board yet - which does not meet again till October) that I am underqualified.... I also have two and a half years experience working for a WA accountant, completing hundreds of all the different type of tax returns....

Thanx for any advice..

Being a member of a recognised professional body (ACCA and NIA are both recognised), in itself, does not make you eligible to be a tax agent. Usually you need 8 years relevant experience.

Your ACCA qualification is equivalent to an Australian bachelors degree in accounting, but where you may have difficulties is the requirement to have studied commercial law for 18 months of this.

Thanks Jaj, I thought I had read that website very carefully, but somehow managed to overlook the 18months of commercial law bit - guess thats a waste of the $400 application fee!!!! Although if I go back to other qualifications before my accounting stuff, I may be able to scrape together enough law papers - will have to have a look.

Thanks again....

I actually find it hard to see how a 3 year accounting degree could possibly include 18 months of "commercial law". Maybe you should ask them for more clarity on this.

It's possible that it's meant to cover those who have double commerce/law degrees, but even then the law content would be much wider than commercial law.
