Re: Would you have come to America ...
I really have no idea why anyone should question the authority of a source that can be written by anyone.
I think that one of the issues with these language counting exercises is how easy it is to compare apples and oranges. The English-speaking countries tend to have thorough census statistics that measure whether English is a primary language in the home. By that standard, there are a lot of people in anglophone countries who won't be counted as English speakers for the sake of these definitions.

My 6th grader has grasped the concept that his teachers won't allow him to use Wikipedia as a source for his essays, but then not everyone is as bright as a 6th grader............

I tend to agree with you, probably not a crock.
It's hard to know, though, because that website has an unusual pricing model. Anyone can see the aggregate data on the web, but only paying subscribers can see the sources cited.

I've lost track.
Why does it matter how many people in the world speak English again? I'm sure there was a reason, but I seem to have misplaced it.

It never did. All Robin did was point out an erroneous statistic in a source that was posted. I mean, the unmitigated gall, eh?

If not, they should be.
It wasn't my source .
I've been backing him up. I can't even remember why it even came up at all now, everyone knows Mandarin is the most commonly spoken language. Spanish and English are pretty close together in 2nd and 3rd. Whoop-de-frickin'-do.
