Hi all!
We are looking for a new mattress but have no idea which are the best or worst Canadian mattress manufacturers? I've shopped around at a few places like the Brick and Sleep Country which have lots of choice like Serta, Simmons, etc. We tested a Dreamstar mattress that was very comfortable and affordable in a small independent furniture shop but haven't seen Dreamstar mattresses for sale in any of the big stores so not sure if they are a good make?
Any advice would be appreciated.

Last summer, I bought a great mattress from IKEA (in Burlington, Ontario) for my daughter when she moved out of her university dorm and into an apartment. It's a Queen mattress that has built-in padding on one side and the thing never needs to be turned over. She loves it.

We use Sleep Country - not sure where their mattresses are made.
Once you have been through their display models, tested the hell out of everything and purchased, they then keep your preferences on file.
Go to any sleep country anywhere in Canada and they can pull up what you bought in the past and, for example, what type of pillow you like.

IKEA? Was the mattress supplied in a box full of springs, wire, padding an material with instructions on how to make it onto a mattress once you arrived home?

And it wasn't one of those rolled up ones either - although that's what I wanted to buy for my daughter as those were cheaper and looked fine to me! She insisted on a better one and I had to strap the thing to the top of my minivan and drive it 45mph from Burlington to London, Ontario. I had to keep stopping to check it as I was convinced it was about to fly off the roof and onto the highway. Seriously good mattress though. I think it was this one.

We've had IKEA mattresses for a few years and have been very pleased with them. The best mattresses I think are in Westin Hotels, but they are very expensive to buy, especially compared to IKEA prices!

Another vote for IKEA - For one all their SULTAN mattresses are covered by a 25 year warrenty - thats pretty hard to beat. We got the SULTAN HULTSVIK mattress which has pocket-coils and a memory foam pillowtop about 2 years ago and it's still extremely comfortable. We went everywhere, the Brick, Sleep Country and a couple other places and IKEA offered the most affordable comfortable mattress with the best warranty.
The only mattress I've been on that was more comfy was the Heavenly Mattress at a Westin Hotel.
EDIT: bcmama - Haha you said the same thing as me! The Westin mattresses are really good, was really impressed when I stayed at the one in Bellevue.

We went to sleep county and ended up with this one http://www.sleepcountry.ca/products/...m/default.aspx
Very comfortable and firm.
Manufacturers create models specific to a retailer, so the same mattress may have a different name in different stores.

I have a lot of experience with beds here.
The main thing I have learned which is worth knowing is DO NOT BUY A BED FROM THE BRICK!!! (or anything else for that matter) I've bought three beds from different locations, customer service sucks if you have a problem and need to return it. Literally I could write a book on the problems I've had with that company and moreover I would have the time to write it in the amount of time it took to sort out the problems.
IKEA is pretty crap also, however their one saving grace is that their beds are actually quite good for the money. Talk about delivery from IKEA, pah, jesus I was stood in line for two hours waiting to talk to a rep once to arrange it. Plus they put the beds at the back of the warehouse and the trolleys aren't large enough to move them. Plus the delivery people are some removals company they use, staffed with idiots. One time when they were delivering they point blank refused to take their shoes off for "health and safety" reasons, so I suggested that if they didn't I would grease the staircase to prevent them from walking dirt everywhere - then they took their shoes off.
If you want to try out beds I recommend Sleep Country, customer service is massively better than The Brick and they specialize in selling beds, unlike Costco and Sears.
Another thing I will say is that you can have problems finding a quality bed compared to the UK, there are lots of big brand names like Simmons and Serta about but they are made in the local plant in Canada and imx they are not that good (or rather they can be but it really is hit and miss). This is why I ended up with an IKEA bed on my NINTH ATTEMPT to get a new bed (I kid you not).
If you can find a mattress you like in the UK I recommend bringing it over. A UK King is not the same size as a Queen here, they are slightly different and Queen size sheets will not properly fit a UK King although they are close. So bring over sheets too.
On the subject of memory foam, if you want one get it from IKEA, no idea where the foam comes from that they make beds with here but it's unsafe imo. The IKEA stuff comes up from Mexico. I literally had to see the doctor with the fumes I had coming off a Simmons mattress I had. Also Canadian mattresses are often made with lots of polyester in them which will cook you alive.

Just to add to my post above because I didn't stress it enough - check the polyester content, I mean REALLY check the polyester content, not just a casual fondle of the label, really study it. And avoid it like the plague.

I don't think the manufacturer makes much odds unless you pay $$$$. We have two King Koil mattresses, on is great, the other is lumpy and springy.

sleep country knocked 2/3 off the price of the mattress i bought...
they also claim to beat any other retailers price by at least 5%, including Closing Down sales
