Their mattresses are excellent and the 90 return policy on the SULTAN mattresses is hard to beat.

Always? I've rarely had any issues returning stuff to IKEA unless I go when it's busy (which I avoid if possible). Everyone seems to take their kids and granny on weekends so I avoid it like the plague Sat/Sun. I work at home so can go during work hours on week days when the place is practically deserted. Even weekday evenings are usually OK.

Some times are better than others. Call your local store and they'll confirm the best days & times to visit.
Here is what I have learned through many years of visiting IKEA. Weekdays are generally much better than weekends. Opening time and 60-90 mins before closing are also generally better than other times. The best time is opening time on weekdays because stock is usually replenished overnight. If you go late in the day there's a better chance what you're looking for is out of stock. If you can manage it, almost any time during weekdays is fine when most other people are at work.

I'm watching this thread with interest, didn't know Ikea matresses had such a good rep...weird.
Mine is an old Sealy two-sided mattress that's been taking it like a champ ...but lately I've been looking high and low for new two-sided mattresses, are they pretty much obsolete?

At the end of the day they have better beds at a reasonable price but the service is crap.

But you will get a bed you can sleep on there. Two hours drive and crappy service are tolerable if you get a bed you can sleep on.

Having tried this trick myself (many times) at the one in Calgary, what happens is that they don't have any staff at quiet times, so you end up waiting even longer.
What also irks me about IKEA is that you think to yourself that you can't be bothered so you'll order it online, then they tell you it will take a month or more because it's coming from their warehouse wherever it is.
I don't personally rate most of the stuff at IKEA, their sofas and so on are too small for the typical N American house but I do think their beds are the best value for money you can get.

Thanks for your advice Steve, we will consider Ikea too.

Not much difference between the UK arse (7th) and Canadian arse (6th) though according to this OECD global obesity rates study:
http://www.oecd.org/health/49716427.pdf
UK women (23.9%) have higher obesity rates than Canadian women (23.2%).
Canadian men (25.2%) have higher obesity rates than UK men (22.1%).
There's a similar pattern between girls (UK more obese) and boys (Canada more obese).
The US (1st) and Mexico (2nd) lead the world but New Zealand (3rd), Chile (4th) and Australia (5th) are right up there in the wobbly cheeks stakes.
