You have no values? that speaks volumes...

Maybe, but that's not a rebuttal of my suggestion that your position is inconsistent. If all values and no values are equal then how is it that values are important?

Parental affluence is perhaps a key factor in all this too I think.

My suspicion is that there is more opportunity for the less than wealthy to give their kids something other than hanging around on corners to do in Canada, but its more gut feel than anything else...

All the parents I know (family, friends) who are OK with raising kids in the UK are on the affluent side of society and live in "nice" areas.

Beyond the obvious influence of parents, the attitude and expectation of a childs peers will have a major influence too wont it? If the media makes a great deal about gangs of indolent youfs hanging around on corners intimidating pensioner then thats what youfs will seek to do to some extent. It becomes almost a self fullfilling prophecy. On the other hand if the media is full of stories of selfless kids helping out in soup kitchens for the homeless (if only to get the necessary volunteer hours to graduate high school), then society is unlikely to be worse off as a result.

Anyway, it will be interesting to see how the UK looks through these parental eyes next week, not that visitors ever really see the whole picture.

Do you REALLY believe that? Perhaps some of the press do, but I have grave doubts about the majority of them. Its all about writing what sells isnt it, and misery sells.

Hahahahahaha. Classic. Admit it, the UK is full of crime because you saw a text vote on sky news.

Possibly so, and this relates to Iain's point about affluence. If your local rag in England is the Willesden Gazette there will be lots of true crime stories in it. If your local rag in Canada is the Rexdale Gleaner, the same will be true. If, by emigrating you can move from a sink estate to a gated one you win, though the same would be true of a similar move without emigrating.

The media may or not report actual events accurately. However they are exceptionally bad at providing information about risk and probability; as are the police who are the worst people to talk to about this.

You don't have to tell us anything, but without citing evidence it is just another uninformed baseless opinion on the internet. "I'm in the know" does not count as proof.

I do not have to justify my opinion to you or anybody else, and my opinion is based on my knowledge.

No you don't. But without providing evidence, you cannot expect your view of the UK to be taken seriously when it doesn't match publicly available statistical evidence. Or my own anecdotal experiences for that matter.

I think for most non specialised, non well paying jobs, you are more likely to be able to make that leap up the ladder in Canada, where tradespeople, middle management and technical bods tend to be paid a more liveable wage relative to property costs etc.

If you have equity then sure, a move to a "higher class" but cheaper part of the UK might work (ie from SE estate to a posher outlying area of a northern city), but if you still need to work to pay the mortgage you are going to find cheaper parts of the UK just pay less for the same work and you are no better of. Cheaper parts of Canada also pay less, but I suspect there is a better wage to living cost ratio here in most cases once you are reestablished.

Ultimately I think happy settled parent stand more chance of raising well adjusted kids, so if the parent have a bee in their bonnet about moving to Canada, then the kids will benefit from them doing it. Once the idea of moving is planted, its hard not to scratch the itch I think.

I'm afraid I can't find anything in that with which to disagree. Perhaps Almost Canadian will be along later.
