Must admit that myself and Mr Y got bitten quite a few times last year by blackfly and mozzies. Kids were okay though. The bites gave us very itchy wheals and it was disgusting when bitten on the scalp

This year I will be more vigilent with the bug spray.

A lot of places in Canada have this problem - it's not confined to NS.
Swarms of black flies appear in the humid summer months in parts of Ontario; mosquitoes are a nuisance, again in the high humidity. I find taking antihistamine for a few days before the onset of hot humid weather helps. They'll still bite but the itch/scratch shouldn't be as bad.

They could be fun if that's all you wore though!

I'd reconsider anywhere Canada if I were you......bugs are part of everyday life here...........just some areas are worse than others.

True enough. But the GTA, even the northern suburbs such as Richmond Hill, don't really have a problem at all. Sometimes a few mozzies, but citronella with a bit of OFF seems to work OK . No blackflies at all. Sometimes wasps/yellowjackets etc but they're not really a bother 99% of the time.

Does the smog kill 'em off ?

My uncle lives in halifax NS, and plays a lot of golf. He says they have a local rule that you are allowed to pick the ball up and wipe the bugs off, as it becomes black with them.

You apparently have to be very careful not inhale them as well.

I don't know what sort of bugs he was referring to .... I think he said they were midgies, but I guess they could be mosquitoes or black-flies?

Here in Alberta, maybe in the woods particularly, there is a small fly called a no-see-um (seriously!!) which is apparently a flying mouth!!

You don't need all these toxic chemicals like DEET to keep bugs away. Just smoke heavily. It works for me.
