No, I've always tried to stay away from child rearing books apart from the ones I bought when I was first pregnant. (And oh my God that feels like a lifetime ago :D)

I guess I'm glad that I brought up three kids who don't think that.

The opinion of their peers may be more important (at that age, anyway) but I don't think that any of them would ever really...

They kind of knew it wouldn't have any effect :)

All they were concerned about was the internet availability and how far they would have to travel to school/uni.

How did I manage? I didn't do anything apart from give them tools to stay in touch with their former peer group and then threw them into school here.

Obviously the kids weren't fazed or bothered...
