Today's shootings

Re: Today's shootings
Trump now advocating arming teachers as the solution.
Trump endorses guns for teachers to stop shootings - BBC News
I despair. Teachers commit to a career caring for kids, now POTUS wants them to gun them down. I don't think this is what the Florida school kids meant when they said "no more".
<shakes head & tries not to weep at the senseless waste and stupidity of it all>

I rather liked this little piss-take from a Dutch comedy sketch show...

Re: Today's shootings
I read somewhere that some commentator said Sandy Hook was the turning point because nothing was done meaning it was accepted that 20 young children could lose their lives and it didn't matter enough. In other words if nothing was done at that point it wasn't going to be.
I'm not expressing it very well and probably not entirely accurately either.

My theory is if they're old enough to pull the trigger in the US then the government should give them a fire arm.
We'll see where they are in 5 years with regards to amending the amendment.

Re: Today's shootings
Maybe we'll have a new expression to replace "going postal"
Not sure what it would be though. Going educational doesn't have the same ring.
"Not detention again, sir?"
"Not this time sunshine" Blam! Blam!
Or however the American exchange would go...

The whole "arm the teachers" thing is such a joke. FFS, schools have annual funding drives to provide enough pencils and paper for the classrooms, who on earth could possibly think that supplying teachers with guns is a better use of public money?

President Trump again promoted arming specially trained teachers, saying some could get bonuses, but rejected active-shooter drills to prepare for a rampage.

Some NYT letters:

How exactly would this work? You have a gunman running rampant in a school shooting, then teachers come out and start hunting him down with guns drawn, then police come in and you have several people with guns drawn - how do the police know who the gunman is? What about all the potential crossfire? This is a recipe for utter chaos. Knowing how to manage a crisis situation with a gun is very different than just learning how to handle and shoot a gun at a non-moving, non-breathing target. Plus you'll have teachers having to be mindful all day while they're attempting to teach, that they have a loaded gun either on their person or nearby - a whole other set of potential problems comes along with that. This is utter insanity. These are schools with our children, not prisons or war zones. Oh wait, they are actually becoming war zones. The irrationality of this kind of thinking is a frightening display of the lower mentality and lack of true intelligence of these people.

Trump suggested that teachers be armed. I teach, and I come from a family with a few generations of teachers - everywhere from a one-room schoolhouse in Kentucky to major universities.
I do not want to be armed. Education is the goal in any classroom, not fighting off armed attacks in a war zone. Do you want police and the military to start teaching? They are the ones who are trained with guns. More people with guns in the mix will mean more deaths, more injuries, more confusion. There was a police officer on the school grounds. I do not want to intimidate students with guns. I do not want a student to have access to my gun. I do not want accidents or suicides or incidents due to more firearms in the equation.
Will Trump give up his trained bodyguards? I understand that his former bodyguard is making tens of thousands advising the RNC on security. Arm Trump. Arm his staff. Arm legislators and their staffs. If they cannot be professionals in their own fields, make them defend themselves.
The rest of us want to live in an America that is not a war zone. One that does not let anybody walk in off the street and buy battlefield weapons like AR-15s.
Trump and the GOP created this problem. They are the ones who can live in any sick world where they want to point weapons at each other. More guns won't do any good.
I am so sick of Republicans. They are evil.

Yes, arm teachers. And when the shootings move to malls, arm retail workers. And when they move to concerts, arm auditorium workers. And when they move to hospitals, arm doctors and nurses. And so on. What a stupid, ineffective and transparent strategy. All to propagate fear and sell more arms. What small and fearful people populate this administration and congress.

Re: Today's shootings
And if you read Fox News, it's an alternate universe where all news is pro Trump and completely obliterates any sense of reality or sensibility.
Comments on those articles are either from bots, or people with such low levels of intelligence and empathy, it's simply heartbreaking. These are their top comments:
_____
President Trump does not shrink from the heat. He is a President of the people and not Washington.
I don't remember President Obama holding this kind of forum for the victims of other shootings. I think President Trump is getting the job done!
Look how much Obama did........worked great in Chicago
How many with gun charges did obama release from jail in his last year? 10,000's of his Homies are back on the streets.
How many guns did Holder release? 1000's of military style
Why does no one cite those issues?
And what law would drop the crime rate in Chicago 1 point??
Exactly, what good are more gun restrictions if they are not going to be applied to the FULLEST extend of the law? If they did prosecute gun violations to the fullest extent then the current laws probably would be sufficient.

I think what is even more abhorrent is there are widespread and believed conspiracy theories from people on the right wing who call Sandy Hook a "hoax" and the people there (including parents of the children who died, as young as six) "left wing actors".

It might have put The Breakfast Club in a rather different genre of movie, to be sure...

(Credit to Rubio for at least turning up unlike the rest of the Republicans)

Guardian reports that there was an armed deputy outside on campus and did not go in to help:
