Much as I think marriage is just a silly bit of paper everyone should have an equal right to it. Bring it on.

Yay.....can't wait for my friends' wedding. Was just talking about this to her a couple of weeks ago because I hadn't noticed her wedding and engagement rings she wears sometimes and asked if they'd got married when they were overseas last. But they hadn't and will do it as soon as it's legal here. They've been together for over 20 years and have two fantastic daughters. They're a great family and deserve to make it official.

I think it is about time.

Labour have agreed a conscience vote. It will be interesting to see if the libs do the same. An opportunity for the mad monk to show he can accept alternate opinions or a potential Lib splitter.

The problem with conscience votes is that it tends to be the concscience of the parliamentarian - not his or her electorate. A mandate fixes all problems

It is the way parliamentary democracy works. An alternative is to put all votes to the people.

If the redneck labour QLD mps vote against and the libs vote as a block against then the legislation will fail.

I'm in favour - Why on earth shouldn't two people be allowed to commit their lives to eachother? But I'd rather it be named something different to marriage...

Sadly not. Here you get ALP caucus making a decision, stacked branch meetings making a decision, union powerbrokers making a decision, and the party enforcing it under threat of expulsion. That's how half the crap that the people don't want gets forced upon them....

A conscience vote simply removes those shackles and then the politician votes how they personally feel...

What SHOULD happen is the politician should represent the majority feeling of his/her electorate on each issue. It very rarely happens.
