Need to do six months
#1
Hello hairdressers!
I did a City & Guilds in hairdressing, altogether around 7.5 years salon experience. My family in Adelaide (Uncle) will sponsor us to go over. However, I have been in full-time education for the last 5 years and have just been doing hairdressing on the side for cash in hand. Apparently though I need to do six months at 20 hours paid hairdressing prior to application.
Just wanted to say good luck to everyone trying to get there or are on their way! Enjoy the sun

Hi Buzby
I'm in the same boat as you, been back hairdressing for over a year now. Qualified at level 3, but looking for another job. Present one, I only average 15hrs a week. Desperatly looking for better hours in another salon, then hopefully on my way. That's the plan, just got to tell hubby and kids!!!!!!
Regards

Hi Longton,
It must be frustrating for you, just a few more hours thats all you need. I did think of maybe going mobile so I could be more flexi with my hours but fear that would just mean extra work, ie, registering, equipment.
So close, but so far away!

hi buzby, i was intersted in what you said about mobile hardressing, why not make up your extra hours doing mobile,as long as you can prove that your doing this by getting letters from your clients, i dont think this will be a problem, ive been hairdressing mobile for the last 12yrs,and ive had no problems with any of the requirements,of course i had a lot to prove but as long as you give them enough paperwork you shouldnt have a problem, i have my visa and im off to brissy in the summer

well i can honestly say that ive never done that nor have anyone else i know who do hairdressing mobile.ive never registered, its not the same as when you have a salon, and i have had a salon as well for 12 yrs
All you have to remember is to make sure you ve got public liability insurance just in case, its a good idea to keep books yourself through out the year, and keep all your reciepts and take them to an accountant at the end of the year, although with self assesmant for your tax these days you dont even have to take them to an accountant, but i like to just in case i make a mistake
thers nothing daunting about it,just put a few cards up in shop windows to start you off

Hi Trace,
how long do you have to do mobile for until you can apply through the TRA?
What was it you gave them as evidence? I have a friend who is a mobile hairdresser and she is looking to go over.
cheers honey

i had to have been working for at least 3 out of the last 4 yrs for min of 20 hrs a week, just the same as if you work for someone else, although i think the rules have changed now so it ll be best to check this out first, you could always ask on the emmigration forum.
We didnt use an agent,so i rang the tra myself in australia and explained my situation and they told me i needed to send
my city and guilds certificate
a certificate from the hairdressing federation to prove i had served an apprenticship...i didnt even know these existed
A detailed letter desrcibing everything that i learned during my training, even the most basic things like shampooing and answering the phone
and it had to be signed by my employer at the time of my apprenticship.
a detailed description of everything i have done since my apprenticeship, including any extra certificates...this is because as soon as i had done my apprenticship i took over the salon that i trained in ,as my employer retired so i became a salon owner.
Details of when i became a mobile hairdresser.
Aheaded written letter from 3 different wholesalers,to say that i bought stock off them regular and how long i had been with them.
A letter from my accountant to tell them how long i had been self employed
letters of clients to say what service i provided for them and how long i had been doing their hair...for this i chose people to cover every service that i do.
i sent 20 letters from clients.
Hope this is of some help, although this was what i personally had to send due to my circumatances,if your thinking of going through the skilled independant route it would be best to contact either the tra your self ,as i did, or go through an agent or even ask on the emmigration forum, they should be able to tell you, everyones circumstances are a bit different, and i know that if you work for an employer its much easier.
Its best to get it clear in your mind what is needed before you send the application off, then your less likely to fail.
I fast tracked my tra which took just 12 wks
phew need a drink know after all that, lol

awww cheers Trace,
I think that I am trying in vain to fast track myself. It is only becasue i know I have sisters over there who have a life so I and my family would like one. I am going to to the designated route and hope my sisters don't move. I will be applying either end of this year or begginning of next.
