Any welders out there in the Adelaide area?
What are the conditions like, especially in the heat?
Is there really a shortage of trained welders to go round?
Cheers

Hi
Can't really help with work conditions etc, but there are plenty of welding jobs around in SA. I don't think you'll have a problem getting work.
Maybe post on www.adelaidebrits.tk as well.
Hopefully someone in the profession will answer soon.

Good post, although I can't help with your thread, I would be interested to know also, as the OH is a welder fabricator and we are hoping to move to Perth or Brisbane.
Any advice would be great !!

Hiya,I'm a welder living in Brisbane.Plenty of work if you like mig or flux-core.Majority of work south-side towards Wacol and around Hemmant.Conditions are pretty basic,I don't want to put your hubby off,but i'll tell you how i've found it.I was spoilt in U.K,i worked for Rolls-Royce working on aircraft engines good pay, conditions, job security etc.You probably won't find job security here, the average hourly wage for 1st class welder here would be for permanent $25-$28 or for a casual position(no hols or sickies) would be $26-$31,they do like you to put the hours in also 60+ hours a week is quite common. If he's after tig work there's not much about(mainly stainless+ally) I've only seen 2 tig jobs advertised north-side in 6 months, like i said nearlly all the work is south-side,their not big on health +safety here either. If your chasing money work in mines is lots of $$$ but lots of time away from home 4weeks on 1week off.Of the 4 poms i know who are welders also,1 has gone home,1 is now a bus driver,1 is a courier and the other is a postie that speaks for it-self and there is me who returns to UK in Feb.Alot of welders do seem to drop out of the trade after a couple of years of being here.If your hubby can get his head around the long hours and in general some of the bad conditions of the fab shops he should be ok, I couldn't.Hope this hasn't put you off!!But in my short experience here this is how i've found it.Good luck for the future.
