Yeah, California is by far the most open minded place that I have lived in the states but you pay the price, especially if you live in North California or south California (cost of living).

California is generally made up of three divisions: north, central and south.
I have been to all, lived in the north: silicon valley. Central California there is not much there but way cheaper than north or south. The question you should be asking is what is your life style like? That is a better way to find out if Cali is for you. What type of weather temperatures, cost of living, employment, type of people who you have subjects in common etc.

Yes, I have been through that town, personally I would be bored to death, places like sacromento, the wine counties, LA, San Diego, silicon valley, dublin are places I would live if I were back in Cali.

Bored to death in SLO? It's beautiful there.
LA is very much a dump in many places.
Traffic, overpopulation, heat...hellish.
And Sacramento? Dublin?

LA is horrible, gawd knows why people 'dream' of going there.

Maybe beautiful but I will still get bored if there are not fun things to do, such museums, galleries, eateries (international) etc.
Not all of LA is the same, plus the surrounding areas are nice Santa Barabara etc.
Sacromento is certainly cheaper than the SF bay area, moneteray is another very nice place to live.

Going back to the OP and initial responses. There's so much hate for Los Angeles on BE.
It really is exactly what you make of it. Saying you hate Los Angeles is like saying you hate Southern England. It's just too big and too varied to hate it all.
I really love living here. I surf in Malibu twice a week. I run on the beach. I work hard and have my dream job. I'm lucky to have an affordable, beautiful apartment with rent that quite frankly is the envy of friends overpaying in London or NYC. I drive a car that would way too expensive in the UK but just right here, and have a group of friends (some SoCal natives, some east coast transplants and some British expats) that are nice, friendly, honest folks.
I feel grateful that I enjoy L.A. I guess if you came here to "make it" as an actress and ended up a waiter at the Cheesecake Factory, it would suck. But work hard, play hard, make friends, be entrepreneurial, don't be afraid to explore, MAKE SURE YOU GET A CAR, and California is pretty damn awesome.
